She wants us to empathize with people who want to behead us and destroy America. Can you imagine Bush coming on TV after 911 and telling the American people that we need to empathize with terrorists?

wonder what she got paid and how many crummy speeches she gives these days.. She should know by now that some people only understand a heavy hand... not the kill em with understanding and kindness bs.. This is nothing more than campaigning and getting paid damn good.. must be nice to have friends at these chump universities
Well, she did not, to be fair, state that one must always be empathetic to one's enemies, but 'as far as possible' .
Plus, I doubt she meant (for we only see a snippet of the speech, which was probably more than 33 seconds long) such 'enemies' as those terrorists that are executing Westerners, but more like Russia and the like. Try to see things from Russia's perspective, if you will (for I have read that Russian's tend to believe that the West is trying to encompass Mother Russia, and starve it out, etc).

No, but I can imagine Bush going after Saddam Hussein for what happened on 911, while at the same time not investing enough in the fight in Afganastanian...
Everybody is the way they are for a reason. If I had grown up in the same exact environment as someone who became a terrorist and had the exact same DNA as that person, I would also become a terrorist. Environment and genes aren't the fault of the people they are given to.
Doesn't make what they're doing any less evil. And it doesn't mean we shouldn't be fighting them. But when you boil it down to its most basic level, they are the result of circumstances out of their control. So yeah we should empathize with them. All people deserve our empathy. Hate will get us nowhere.
She's right -- you need to empathize with people, including those you don't like, so you can understand how they tick and will act. You don't have to sympathize with them -- you can still try to mentally put yourself in a Jihadist's shoes and then go bomb them afterward, with the added bonus of being more likely to predict their reactive actions than if you did it without thought.

In spite of DNA, people can think for themselves. Are you excusing Timothy mcviegh, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, 911 terrorist, Isis, Al Qaeda, muderers and rapists all because it is out of their control?
