"I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials."
George Mason, in Debates in Virginia Convention on Ratification of the Constitution, Elliot, Vol. 3, June 16, 1788

"Whereas civil-rulers, not having their duty to the people duly before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as military forces, which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms."
Tench Coxe, in Remarks on the First Part of the Amendments to the Federal Constitution

"The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed."
Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist Papers at 184-188

Every rural farmer in the midwest owns not just one, but often dozens of guns with thousands of rounds of ammo. Gun culture is part of the great plans and the heartland of the midwest, not just the redneck south. Good luck disarming them.

Why not just move to a state that shares your ideals like California or Connecticut? There are far more important causes to be fighting for such as factory farming abuses or making sure the remaining rainforests aren't clear cut for farmland...

They serve zero purpose but to entertain and needlessly kill hundreds of thousands of people a year.

...GMO,...oh wait, Bill Nye the Science Guy has finally weighed in:

"...went to Monsanto and I spent a lot of time with the scientists there." As a result, he added with a grin, "I have revised my outlook, and am very excited about telling the world. When you're in love, you want to tell the world!"

So it looks like GMO is safe for the science-minded progressive left.

The US did not have a standing army in 1788. All it did have was a militia. Read the 2A with that in mind. Particularly the beginning words.

I think that was cleared up by the Supreme Court.

The SC went back in time and formed the army?

Nope, the SC has a current interpretation that is essentially meaningless in todays world.

The justices said the amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia and to use that firearm for lawful purposes, such as self-defense in the home.

That was allowed even in frontier days. But even places like Dodge City and Tombstone barred the carrying of guns openly back then.

I've seen people carrying weapons in stores, etc and they look absolutely silly. There is a time and place for everything.
