Why should they be forced to learn English? Puerto Rico doesn't border ANY English speaking territories, and of those Puerto Ricans who decided to move to the states, most of them can speak English once they get to the mainland. Furthermore, they never asked to be part of the US anyway.
Exactly right.

you can say the same thing about the South. Actually the majority in the South wanted to get out of the U.S.....in Puerto Rico is only less than 3% of the electorate.

if the U.S didn't listen to the majority in the South in 1865 why would it listen to 3% of the electorate in P.R.???

easy, I'm far-right in economics and politics and I'm half Latino...........you have your knuckleheads on both sides who have anger issues who talk a lot out of their a$$. They are the minority but they sure are the loudest...

anybody that works to take care of their family, it doesn't matter if you make min. wage and are a responsible citizen are not a PARASITE. You don't judge a man by the size of his wallet.

What this guy said its just ignorant and offensive to Puerto Ricans.......you can be against the big welfare state and against big government but when you insult a whole nation of people with stereotypes, you just lost the argument before it even began.

This is the dumbest and most inaccurate thing i've read on here in a long time!

Certain factors make you more eligible for SSDI. This includes: being 50+, lacking higher education, and now *not speaking English*

You do not just "get SSDI" for not speaking English.

OY-VEY PEOPLE!!

Now, I am NOT advocating replacing Spanish. I am advocating for a completely bilingual Puerto Rico. Study after study has proven that Puerto Ricans who cannot speak English are poorer and less well off.
Bilingual Puerto Ricans are better off because they had the money and resources to send their kids to schools where English was taught well. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Since U.S. Citizenship was granted by congress in 1917, 99% have NEVER renounce their U.S. Citizenship or burn their U.S. passports......I can count with 2 hands the numbers of Puerto Ricans who tried to renounced their U.S. citizenship and most of them are DEAD (natural causes)

2) You can't use the lame excuse that is being force on them.......if I extend my hand with a $100 bill with benefits and you take it and use it and benefit from it , that is NOT a force act. A force act is making you take something against your will and do something by force that has a negative effect on you.............now be honest, if you compare Puerto Rico to the neighbors in the Caribbean of Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba and even Venezuela with all their oil, you think Puerto Rico is getting a bad deal being a U.S. territory and they are being force? come one, you know better than that!

3) Actually nobody should be force to speak a particular language that is against the principles of the U.S. Constitution.....its in the best interest of any U.S. Citizen to dominate the English language and another language. In this GLOBAL economy its a must and it helps for job opportunities.......the problem in P.R. is the Public School system just like the inner cities in the U.S with kids not learning proper English and Math, one of many failed liberal policies........the people in PUERTO RICO that get a proper English education are the upper class that send their kids to private schools in the island. Those are the ones with the good jobs. The ones that don't have the money are stuck in the lousy public school system......that's not a U.S. Federal problem, that's a local problem.
1. Your example here makes zero sense. 99% of Puerto Ricans have never renounced their US citizenship because what would they be citizens of if they did? That's not a metric for whether or not Puerto Ricans have ever been interested in independence.

Furthermore, the first elected governing body in Puerto Rico, the House of Delegates, DID support independence in the early 20th century and were subsequently overridden by the US government and had US citizenship FORCED upon them.

2. I don't think you know what force is...as for Puerto Rico getting a bad deal, PR is worse off than every state in the US, and it's economy is in shambles. Compare that to places like the Bahamas, Barbados, Guadeloupe or Martinique and yes, Puerto Rico is getting a terrible deal.

3. Again, you sound pretty silly here. English is an important language to learn in a Global economy, but the overwhelming majority of people don't participate in a "global" economy. When was the last time you had to make a major deal with someone in Shanghai or Cape Town or Frankfurt? Probably never. Most people don't speak English and get by FINE.

As for blaming PR education on liberals...PR schools suck because PR is POOR. Has nothing to do with politics.

Also of note is the fact that the states with the worst educational outcomes are all Red states. Food for thought.

Martinique and Guadalupe are overseas departments of France - the direct equivalent of a state of the United States.

English the language of business, this is an indisputable fact. Speaking English is a necessity in the modern world.

None of these people that can't speak English will ever work in the business world where they need to know English.

Did you know that the 2012 Plebescite election on Puerto Rico's status, statehood garnered 61% of the vote? Did you also know that over the years, the vote for independence has continually shrunk?

What makes you think that there is a large number of Puerto Ricans that want independence? Or is it you that wants it for the Island?
