Facing a $1 billion budget deficit, Arizona's has reduced the lifetime limit for welfare recipients to the shortest window in the nation. Welfare recipients will now have their benefits cut off from 5 years down to 12 months. I personally think the max should be a little longer, 2 years but if other states follow, Obama better get busy and stop worrying about climate change and get busy on increasing those jobs. Lesson... never depend on others, not even the government. Make your own way in life.

Good. I hope this is upheld in the courts (leftists will almost certainly challenge it). While 1 year may not be enough to get everyone financially stable to a point where they don't need welfare, money doesn't grow on trees and cuts have to be made. Also, perhaps these cuts will make people more serious about looking for work, etc. Welfare shouldn't be permanent, but many people, under current rules, often treat it as a permanent assistance program, which decreases any urge/drive to better themselves financially as they'd have to risk losing access to "free" money.

Key words here are "BUDGET DEFICIT".

The poor are outnumbering the taxpayers.
In other words we are running out of money.

Liberals are already bouncing off walls... "what about the children". But they are not concerned about the children when they have children they know they can't support. Having children when you know you can't support them is the most selfish thing you can do but liberals don't want to talk about that.

I think cuts depend on state of the state. More states are looking to balanced budget especially seeing states have done it and what it means in growth. As Greece has learn spending on credit always has consequences often higher interest rate until the bottom when you can't borrow.

The welfare population will inevitably gravitate to the states with the most welfare.

As it should be.

I'd get behind that IF the feds would step up and REALLY start nailing the illegal aliens AND the people who hire their kind. At least some of us who WANT to work might have a shot at getting jobs AND at halfway decent wages.

Given the number of programs available welfare can end up being better than having a min wage job.
And earn $1 over the eligibility and you lose it all.

Welfare is a disincentive to bettering yourself because it's not a gradual weaning off..it's a 100% cutoff and they stand to lose much more for very little gain.

Sweden, for example, treats welfare as taxable income and those on welfare in Sweden have to pay taxes on their welfare benefits.

That, or they'll actually get more serious about looking for work. Not to disparage those who are in need, but I think that it is telling that the House GOP's refusal to extend unemployment benefits has had the opposite impact that Democrats feared. Instead of wallowing in their loss of unemployment benefits, Americans actually started getting serious about engaging the labor market.
