Now, scientists say, the Earth is on the brink of a sixth such “mass extinction event.” Only this time, the culprit isn’t a massive asteroid impact or volcanic explosions or the inexorable drifting of continents. It’s us.
“We are now moving into another one of these events that could easily, easily ruin the lives of everybody on the planet,” Stanford biologist Paul Ehrlich said in a video created by the school.
In a study published Friday in the journal Science Advances, biologists found that the Earth is losing mammal species 20 to 100 times the rate of the past. Extinctions are happening so fast, they could rival the event that killed the dinosaurs in as little as 250 years. Given the timing, the unprecedented speed of the losses and decades of research on the effects of pollution, hunting and habitat loss, they assert that human activity is responsible.
I just wanted to follow up on my other post about CO2 levels. We are killing the planet yet many do not even care to face these facts. Ignorance is bliss.
Money isn't the issue, it's the fact that governments consolidate so much power in the hands of so few and those few tend to be the most evil.
I feel it's a bit of both. To gain power at least in this country you need money. Lobbyists are professional bribers, and of course our so called "representatives" have their hands out to grab the cash. Never mind our elections
So, let me guess what the proposed solution is. Bear with me here.
The solution being proposed is massive tax increases and redistribution of wealth programs, overseen by leftists who will determine who gets the money, and a lot more intrusive control over people's lives, with the left presiding.
Paul Ehrlich. Isn't he the "scientist" that wrote about the "population time bomb" that predicted mass starvation all over the planet, even here in the U.S., by the 1990s. I'd take whatever he says with a healthy heapin' of salt.
Then you should do the world and your grandchildren a favor and take yourself out of the world.
Stop using those resources they could save up so they could live a few extra days floating an artificial island of rubber tires under a burning sun.
I just love your use of hyperbole "We're killing the Planet!"
This planet was here 4.5 billion years before we fell out of the tress, and will be here long after our last fossil crumbles into dust. Jesus, you people are fruity as nutcakes. This planet has survived asteroid collisions that would make our world's entire nuclear arsenal look like an M-80 explosion.
Now if you want to talk about whether this world would be "sustainable for mankind", now that's a different topic altogether. But first, you must admit your ignorance about the fact that we don't live in a static environment, and never will. There will always be changes, some caused by us, some from outside sources, but changes nevertheless.
There's not an organism that exists - or ever existed - that doesn't change their environment to some degree. And everything around either adapts or dies. Simple Darwinian evolution. Been going on before us, and will continue with whatever is left, until our sun burns this earth out.
But the earth's "death" will most assuredly not be caused by man. Learn some humility. We are neither that malevolent or that powerful.
Get a grip!
