Still not clear why these two boats were in Iranian water. The initial reports of a broken boat was subsequently denied. Last I heard, it was being attributed to an unreported navigational error.
In other words, the crew screwed up and failed to report it. Under the reported circumstances, these boats were in no position to do much of anything but surrender.
Alls well that ends well and all that.
Sorry that anyone's self esteem is tied to this situation.
That whole story smelled like week old fish. How do two boats not know where they are with today's sophisticated electronic navigational equipment ? We were up to something and got caught, and the easiest route was to surrender and work it out diplomatically.

We will never know the real story here.

except the military uses old tech so they were probably rebooting WindowsXP or installing 23 of 1118 updates on their navigation equipment

Reportedly the wrong data was punched into the GPS like thingy.
The knucklehead crews failed to report their mistake.
It does indeed smell fishy.
Having said this what possible motive would make more sense?

GPS doesn't do you much good when the territorial boundaries are subject to ongoing disputes. The same situation occurred in 2007 when a Royal Navy small craft wandered into waters that have been in dispute for decades.
