"It's obvious even if there was a gun that it was not pointed at the officer."
I'm not a cop, but I would guess that if you wait for someone to point a gun at you, you probably won't have time to use yours. I'd also guess that cops run the license plates before walking up to vehicles and know before approaching if the subject has a criminal record, is on parole, has outstanding warrants, has a history of drug abuse or shooting at cops, etc., as is usually the case in these events. That would no doubt influence how they approach.

Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. One would think a police officer would always be truthful but that's not always the case.

My friend and fellow American. I used to believe everything works as it should. That things are as simple as I believed when I was told by grown ups that if you are good nothing bad will happen to you. I am a college educated, portly middle aged, family man, Sunday school teacher, federal employee. I have a wife, daughter, house of my own. I wear sweater vests with a tie and slacks. I drive a boring midsize car and walk a little beagle around my neighborhood and escort my elderly mom around town.
But I tell you I have gotten stopped and detained by police. I can tell you stories. I don't dislike police officers, I support them and hope they are all well. Yet, I have gotten stopped and detained and I have no criminal record. I have no outstanding warrants.

I've had a couple of traffic stops in my day, and they always run the plates. It's standard procedure. If I'd had charges, they'd show.
If people are just out to randomly kill other people, there are easier ways than becoming a cop first and putting your own life at risk every day.
