I actually don't think Trump is a bigot but he plays to the worst kind of bigotry. Even worse since it's false and hypocritical as well as bad for the country.
The worst kind of bigotry, false, hypocritical and bad for the country? That's the liberals with their anti-westernism/anti-whiteism.
Yes the reality in 1868 was immigration was needed but very low leave alone illegal immigration and almost entirely Western European like 88% of population. Today immigration including illegal is very high and almost entirely not Western European. They never foreseen or intended to give birthright citizenship to vast numbers of illegals and non-traditional immigrants.
"non-traditional immigrants" "not Western European" That says a lot about who you are...

If you read the primary source document I posted (the actual Congressional record of Congress' discussion of the proposed 14th Amendment's citizenship clause), they did indeed foresee the problems that result from unlimited mass foreign invasion if birthright citizenship included the U.S.-born children of non-authorized aliens/foreigners. That's why the clause's framers, Senators Howard and Trumbull, repeatedly stated that those under a foreign power and/or owing allegiance to a foreign sovereignty were excluded by the "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" requirement.
Specific hypothetical examples given ranged everywhere from Australians to Borneans. Read the document:

There is nothing anti-Western or anti-white about me. What I am saying is that Donald Trump doesn't believe a word he says; he is tapping into nativist and bigoted sentiment.

Calling it nativist and bigoted sentiment contradicts not being anti-Western or anti-white. I'd say Trump believes in what he's saying as much or more than any other politician. I'll conceded nativist but that is not a bad thing but a good thing. And bigoted not, we are not intolerant of other opinions or persons. We're tired of tolerating anti-white and anti-American opinions, actions and persons.

Just what nativist and bigoted sentiments are there from Trump supporters and whom are they supposedly directed at?
In mmigrants in Michigan: Trump orders 'tear our families apart' and numerous other threads there is discussion about President Trump's seeming willingness to explore excluding certain immigrants. I think my idea of giving non-citizen and illegal parents who seek to "drop anchor" a choice; return to their countries with their babies or leave them here to be placed for adoption. The proposal is not as heartless as it sounds. The parents can always keep their children; by returning to where they should be. Remember, the parents created a dangerous situation by deciding to have a baby in a country in which they were not legally present, or if legal, only on a very temporary basis.
For more see The backwards liberal immigration logic. Getting rid of the 14th Amendment is like killing an ant with a sledgehammer; lots of collateral damage.
