That's certainly what the mouth breathing morons who designed the pipeline thought. Where is the containment liner in the trench? Where are the leak sensors? Why did they think they could get away with using ductile iron pipe which erodes easily and springs leaks?
Oil companies are sucking vast fortunes out of the Bakken, but want to build the cheapest, shoddiest pipeline possible. It's not a possibility that the pipeline will leak, it's a certainty. They need to redesign the whole mess and bring it up to a reasonable safety standard. Every service station in America dug up its tanks to install leak containment and sensors. The oil companies can do the same with their pipelines.
That sounds like a threat....... it's really very easy... Quit using it if you don't like it......
It's the oil companies who started the shooting war. That's not a threat, it's reality. If they don't like it, they can redesign their shoddy pipeline so it won't leak into the water supply. They know how, they just don't want to.
There have been 240 oil pipeline leaks in the last 10 years, an average of two a month, and the oil companies want to keep right on building leaks. The protesters are calling them to task, and they companies are responding with violent attacks against the protesters. The oil companies are the ones escalating the confrontation. They shouldn't be surprised if people take up arms to defend themselves. A half a dozen drones equipped with incendiaries could make a real mess out of a refinery. It wouldn't take a thousand peaceful protesters to do it either, just half a dozen people who are tired of being shot at.
Oil companies are just being a bunch of arrogant dickwads unwilling to even consider the very real concerns of the people they are shooting at.
They were also throwing rocks at cops. Assaulting someone then complaining when they assault you back is foolishness. If the protestors didn't want to be sprayed with the water cannon then they should have remained peaceful.
They were trying to clear the bridge of burned out vehicles that DAPL set on fire to block traffic. All of the violence was initiated by the police, not the protesters.

Ductile iron? They can't use either ductile or cast iron for a pipeline like this. Neither can be welded. All joints have to be mechanical, which is not legal by any guidelines I know of state or federal for chemicals or petroleum products. Where did you get the skinny they had been cleared to use ductile? Water systems don't even use ductile much any more. Or cast. C900 plastic is the standard for water now, and a petroleum pipeline like this would have to be a minimum of schedule 80 steel. 120 would be more likely.
Ductile or cast just won't do. The joining methods are not designed for petroleum products. But hey, if you've got access to specs on this project that specify ductile, I'd like to see them. I've never seen ductile on anything but very old water systems. They still make it, but it's not exactly a popular material for either cost or ease of install.
Quite frankly, it sucks.

That's because he can't show them to you. His "specs" don't exist. I've seen the prints and the specs. But have learned to quit arguing with folks like this.... give em enough rope and they eventually hang themselves with their "knowledge." LOL
