I imagine the most common way underage prostitutes get help from the system is by being picked up by police and then referred to social services.
And with the change in legislation, the child in question is no longer at risk of being charged with a crime when encountering law enforcement. Can you imagine that being an improvement?
I wouldn't be surprised. It would seem to fit with the feminist agenda - define all prostitutes as victims, with penalties reserved only for the men involved.
Ah, the mask slips. It's somehow unfair to the johns that we're not locking up child prostitutes.
Not treating minors who are most likely victims of sex trafficking as criminals is not the same thing as legalizing child prostitution not even if someone wants to try and spin it as such.
This. OP, your news source is a Repub propaganda source that puts a right-wing spin on everything, it's obvious from the article, which rants about a lot more than the child prostitution issue. I imagine the measure is designed to decriminalize exploited children, which makes sense. It doesn't protect them from being picked up by cops and questioned.
From the criminal code, linked in an earlier post:
A commercially exploited child under this paragraph may be adjudged a dependent child of the court pursuant to paragraph (2) of subdivision (b) of Section 300 of the Welfare and Institutions Code and may be taken into temporary custody pursuant to subdivision (a) of Section 305 of the Welfare and Institutions Code, if the conditions allowing temporary custody without warrant are met.
Amazing what a difference it makes to fill out the picture and get all the facts, isn't it?
What source can't be viewed as biased these days though.
Here it is from L.A Times which is a very liberal source.
"Children can no longer be charged with prostitution, given the high incidence of human trafficking of people younger than 18. Adults who perform or solicit prostitution would not face mandatory minimum sentences. "
Senate Bill 1322, authored by Sen. Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles), make the crimes of solicitation and loitering with intent to commit prostitution misdemeanors inapplicable to children younger than 18. It also allows law enforcement to take sexually exploited children into temporary custody -- only if leaving them unattended would pose an immediate threat to their health or safety.
Because their leader has started a trend. All he has to do is say " I hear...." and it becomes fact. That, and the fact they look for anything they can to jump on the other team.
How about the fact that the MSM has had such a liberal bias in the way they frame the news, people of all political stripes have sought other sources (some very good, others very bad) to find news?
When big stories (that would have been covered if it was a (R) politician/policy) are ignored because they would be unfavorable to (D's), then people feel as if the once respected places (CBS, NBC, ABC, NYT, etc.) no longer provide news. Instead it is propaganda or by omission, fake news.
Lastly, how does if feel to get a dose of your own medicine. I remember when Bush was in office, a large % of liberals were "looking for anything they could find to jump on the other team".
Or didn't you notice back then, because it was people from your team doing it?
