That works for district races, but how does that apply to a presidential election?

It's highly likely. He's a populist candidate, and his supporters are sheep. Just like we saw with Obama. Don't underestimate the power of a sheepish support group who have no principles.

If the economy does well , he'll win in a land slide. The bar is pretty low. If Trump does not turn out to be Hitler , some people might begin to realize it was a shame, which it obviously is. Trump will build a wall, deport criminals, and perhaps de-fund sanctuary cities. That will be the extent of the "hate". That will prevent a good deal of opposition. Then if the economy does well in the Rust Belt in particular, then Trump will add Minnesota with the rest of them. He will probably also pick up a few more.

Plus GOP Red States gain 6-12 seats via census soon.

And the 2018 Democratic Senate map is dreadful for them.

The economy will do well but that will overwhelmingly be concentrated in the major metropolitan areas that vote overwhelmingly blue. The situation in the Rust Belt and Appalachia is unlikely to improve.
