During the 4 1/2 decades of life I have lived there have been many presidential elections. Always the winner is gracious, the loser accepts the defeat and retools the message for the next election. I have seen the nation swing both left and right, and until recently those fluctuations have not been that radical. Republicans have always stood for smaller government and traditional values, and democrats believed in more government involvement, labor unions but for the most part still believed in traditional American values. Democrats and Republicans could negotiate and compromise as is necessary for democracy. Bill Clinton worked with the republicans in congress Regan worked with his democratic congress etc. In times of war or crises those partisan boundries did not matter. As recently as sept 11 2001 we saw that. What happened then??
The democratic party has seriously radicalized, that is what has happened. No longer is the average democrat a union member building cars in Michigan who deer hunts on Saturday and makes church by Sunday. (in fact that guy now votes for Trump) Todays democrat is a disgruntled special snowflake millennial who is screaming for socialist programs, gay rights, black lives matter and every other liberal special interest you can think of. The things these new democrats believe in are simply not compatible with American life or with our traditions. Most of them will admit they don't like capitalism, Christianity or the founding Anglo culture of the USA. In fact if you do believe in these things they will call you a racist or demean your intellect. They preach tolerance but do not tolerate others who believe different than they do. In fact they have driven those "old school" working class democrats out of their party. The fact that the old union strongholds in the upper Midwest fell to Trump is proof of that. People there do not get the anti American far left message. Most Americans don't, but in some places like California/PNW and some parts of the Northeast this new far left worldview is quite dominant.
I obviously am a conservative, although I did not vote for Trump or any presidential candidate as I found them all unqualified. I did vote for my conservatives in congress and at state level however. Having said that I do feel that democratic leaders of the past loved this nation and governed as freedom loving Americans even if I don't agree with their policies. One cannot deny that presidents like Roosevelt, Truman and even Kennedy not only loved the nation but did some good things for all of us. Roosevelt especially deserves credit for his WW2 leadership. I say the same for those who voted democrat in the past, these people voted for Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, LBJ etc because they believed in unions, or they believed in a bit more government involvement than I do. I would not question the loyalty of these folks, I know most of them loved the nation even though I did not agree with them. Today is different however. Most of these working class folks have abandoned the democrats, todays democratic voters are just so different and even hostile to everything our nation stands for. For the first time in my life I see post election political riots in my nation. Violence, threats and anger instead of tolerance. I see California is threatening to secede from the union, singers and actors are saying things about the President that could get them put in jail. Where are we going?
We all should read our history, then and only then will people see the path we are on. This kind of division, post election violence can only lead to one place. Threats of secession?? (from both sides in recent years) Civil war anyone?? Revolution maybe? How about a coup? These things will destroy our nation but they are real possibilities at this point. We either find a way to return to civility or we head down the dark road. These divisions and hatreds have been building for decades and these young people are so filled with it. Sadly I don't see them changing. I also don't plan on giving up my country to them either and millions feel the way I do. We are not the radicals here, we only want to preserve our values, laws and economic system we have always had. The old school democrats are not the radicals either. I don't know the answer, things have already gone so far. It is very hard to stop this kind of thing once its started. One crazy event and this nation could unravel. People just don't realize what kind of predicament we are in. I think much of the world does realize it and they are afraid. I don't blame them. Those who do not know or understand their history are doomed to repeat it. Were fixin to repeat some terrible history if we don't get our fecal matter straight.
I'm a right-winger and from what I can see of my left-wing friends on Facebook, they are becoming increasingly violent and vindictive against right-wingers and especially Trump supporters.
One of the more disturbing trends is this "Know Your Local Nazi" thing I see posted by multiple left-wingers. Basically, they go around posting pictures and information about Trump supporters in an effort to get people to try and destroy their lives (easy to do in the Internet Age). There's also this "Punch a Nazi" thing where people beat up Trump supporters in public.
Needless to say, I am buying a gun.

Total bs meant solely to heighten the hate toward Democrats.
Uh; since Trump won, there are a LOT of "liberals" who've gone batcrap crazy in my Facebook Friends line up and, many of them are threatening violence against ANY Trump fan.
Since some of the alt right fools busted on Obama; I figured the alt left fans would have more class since their kind are more "educated". Boy, I was proven wrong; many alt lefties ain't any better. Their kind I DO hold to a higher standard cause of their college degrees, what a sick joke so many of those people are.

Good post, but note that the right wing in the U.S. has radicalized, as well: the Tea Party and religious groups (Moral Majority, etc.) are just the most obvious examples of this. There are a lot of conservatives who see people like Kasich as not conservative enough, and there are folks who think Republicans are traitors if they do not support Trump or other specific candidates. Both the left and the right have become more polarized, and this has been aided by social media. I agree that things don't look good for the country down the road.

Been around for a long time also. Civility will Not be returning, as you said the Divide is too much. So, unfortunately, yes we are heading for a change, a Big one, and yes most likely it will come in one of the ugly forms you mentioned. Time to be realistic and prepare for what is to come.
Why is it a bad idea to buy a gun for protection? I wouldn't be surprised if me being an open Trump supporter results in some of these left-wingers showing up at my house with ski masks and baseball bats. When a right-wing speaker (Milo Yiannopolus) came to my university, there was a shooting and there were left-wingers who had fastened spears.
The shooter was a Trump supporter according to reports.

I have a CCP and do carry on occasion. Not much need to around my way. I suspect around other liberal cities most leftists are anti gun and do not carry. Also for the most part they look to be limp wrested skinny azz sissies who couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag. That said I'd not worry much about them.
I actually used to believe they were somewhat peace-loving.
Now I thoroughly understand how they were the violent slave-lords before the civil war.
If you don't want the entire conservative movement to be painted with the broad brush of those who want to make homosexuality a capital crime and institute Christianity as our state religion, then don't paint all liberals with the broad brush of these protesters.
As a liberal, I am angered by these people inciting violence or dressing up in lewd costumes to protest. Why? It discredits the opposition and re-enforces Trump supporters' devotion to him. If you want to have a dialogue, that isn't the way to do it.
