Just saw on the news that Charlotte immigrants are worried about ICE and deportation now that Trump is President. Why on earth would they be worried?

Am I missing something? If they are here legally they won't be deported!

Over half of my friends are from other nations. Non are worried and all support President Trump's tough enforcement on laws that are already in existence. I see lots of immigrants working their asses off each day and they have my respect. If they are here illegally and are willing to pay a fine, pay for a background investigation, have a full time job, are not on assistance, don't have a criminal record, and are will to sign an agreement to not receive free assistance in five years, I believe they should be considered as candidates to stay. My concern is with vetting of Muslims from Arab countries. I have nothing against Muslims, but I have lived in countries where there are severe problems with Muslims and their unwillingness to assimilate to their hosts' cultures and adhere to local laws and customs. This is what we will face here if we don't get a grip. It is not a surprise that so many that have come here from other countries legally support President Trump. I know how serious immigration is and the repercussions of taking it lightly. I love most foreigners, but just want them to be vetted so we know what we will get. I don't think that a reasonable, mature, well traveled person could disagree.

We need to win a war of ideas and motivate and empower moderate Muslims to denounce and fight archaic brutality and misinterpretation and application of values in the Quran. The divisive and confrontational policy does not help us in this effort. It is exactly what ISIS needs to spread their false doctrine and recruit new enemies that we will have to guard against.

No policy or legal experts on either side of partisan aisle consider Trumps recent executive orders on immigration to be thoughtful, helpful, or legal. He is predictable in making it worse by stoking fear and validating false ideas of intolerant and hateful Americans.

I agree with the points regarding being thoughtful and cautious in immigration policy and have also traveled extensively and have seen and experienced the challenges of non assimilating Muslims. If you fear radical Islam you should be against this policy.

More news sensationalism of them finding immigrants who are scared so they can run a story at 6pm. If you are here legally there is nothing to fear and most all know that. If you are here illegally, you should be worried (and deported). I'm all for legal immigration after vetting (from all countries, not just the 7 muslim majority initially focused on).

If we "need" to get people to denounce and fight archaic brutality, we, or hopefully, they, are doomed. If muslims can't do this on their own volition, they are not the kind of people we "need" in this country, on this planet, or even in this universe.

Exactly. I have been and lived in Muslim countries. Their objective is to convert the world to Islam and reject or destroy those that don't worship Allah. Those that criticize Trump and say that he is being intolerant or simply mean know nothing about the reality of immigration of Muslims into western countries. Show me one European country that is pleased with the results and where it is working out. People need to stop being naive and respect what Trump is trying to do. It was fine when Clinton and Obama came up with strict immigration laws, but all of a sudden they are wrong because a republican is enforcing what should have been enforced all alone. Stop the democratic vs republican and look outside of the box. Maybe his policies could be modified, but we need a moratorium period to do that and that is being fought.

Many who have no problem believing the narrative of the "Western Colonialist" desiring to take advantage of and "bring into line" other cultures, or of Missionaries whose goal it is to "convert", apparently believe those "other cultures" to be incapable of similar motives.

Thanks for the opinions expressed so far.

There was another article in the Charlotte Observer today. The article said that 'immigrants' are threatening voter backlash if the city and county leaders don't act to protect them from arrest, deportation, etc.

The legal immigrants that I know are for strict immigration laws.

Where is this voter backlash going to come from? The illegal immigrants that can't vote?

So they're saying that City and County leaders are supposed to protect law breakers from arrest. What's next escorts for shoplifters to protect them from arrest? Safe passage for shop lifters back to their cars?

We already have extreme vetting. The new proposed policy that has already been ruled as unconstitutional (twice) doesn't make us safer and is celebrated by the radical Muslims we hope to eradicate. It's hilarious to hear the word "naive" used to describe those that understand the long term implications and consequences of such thoughtless and reckless legislation. "Naive" is thinking a 7 country ban is 1) necessary 2) effective in gaining momentum to fight radical Islam. It's raw meat for his obtuse allegiant but universally disregarded by serious foreign policy strategists from both sides of the aisle. Partisanship bias could only explain supporting it as those opposed are represented heavily on both sides.
