They weren't even overbooked. They had to get 4 employees somewhere and I'll bet there was a better way.
Can't believe this has to be explained. The PR on this is just horrendous and their stock is taking a hit today. But, hey, they were 'within their rights".
The video was all over social media; on every news outlet and shown over and over again. Along WITH the tone deaf letter blathering on about 're-accommodating".
Pure ignorance.
My son flies back and forth to Chicago all the time and has always said that United is AWFUL.
Someone's getting sued. I guarantee Attorneys are calling this guy all over the place. Maybe he'll just name a few individuals personally if necessary.
This is the salary of the United Airlines CEO;
Quote:
United Airlines CEO Jeffery Smisek, 60, earned a 39% bump in pay in 2014, according to the Associated Press. Smisek saw his pay rise to $11.3 million, the analysis found.
Perhaps his patients depended on him the following morning and some of them are very ill. Again, that was the last flight out that day to his destination.
But airline delays and cancellations happen constantly (especially in winter). If the doctor was so concerned about ill patients maybe he shouldn't have been travelling.
Imagine you are in a crowded restaurant, 2 or 3 policemen come in and tell you have to leave with them. Naturally you are confused and maybe outraged but as a civilized person you leave with them peacefully. You do not shut down, flail, scream and refuse endangering people around you.
Criticize United 100%
Criticize the security agents a little (maybe they could have been more gentle)
But also criticize Dr69 snowflake for acting like a crying toddler/trapped animal.

A member of 4chan was on that flight and recorded and wrote about the experience on Twitter. The flight ended up being delayed another hour and 1/2 because due to the blood - everyone had to be deboarded and a crew come in to clean up the blood.
Sorry for all those agreeing with the airline - but the procedure they used was uncalled for. Since negotiations to obtain seats started at the gate before boarding - the seats should have been secured before allowing anyone to board - then you wouldn't have had the situation that developed.
I also think many of you fail to see the situation by putting yourself in that person's shoes - regardless whether a dr does reschedule patients in his practice - he was concerned about the patients in the hospital which you can not always find relief for.
Had you or a family member been one of these patients and some dr you didn't know showed up at your bedside when you were expecting your specialist who's been treating you - I'm sure we'd see some outrage from you folks - but then again - until you are in a situation yourself and things hit close to home - you'll continue to lobby for the rules instead of what's appropriate.

If 2 or 3 police officers tell me to leave, I'd want them to tell me why. Police aren't supposed to just haul you off for no good reason. This isn't Russia.

Because the airline has the right to remove anyone they want from the flight. I'm sure he was told by the officers that the airline asked that he give up his seat due to the situation that had obviously been explained to every passenger as they asked for people to give up their seats for vouchers.
Years ago, I watched a man use a marker to cross off "Fly the friendly skies" from a United sign in an airport. He was cussing and carrying on. United is my least favorite airline, probably based on the memory of this man's experience rather than my own.
I used to love to fly Sun Country out of Minneapolis. Every flight was a party.
We moved and now mostly fly Southwest. SWA prices aren't as good as they used to be, but their website is easy to use, particularly when comparing prices between several different days and times.
I love that they've kept the free baggage. Even though we usually fly with just carryon, the policy means that the other passengers aren't loaded down like Sherpas hogging all the overhead space.
I like the boarding process. Seems straightforward and smooth and fairly efficient.
But I mostly like the customer service. It's efficient, friendly, and often with a bit of fun.
Be interesting to see what United comes up with to counter this PR fiasco.
The Sherpa comment...
I know EXACTLY what you mean, and there's even a guerilla-type strategy to air travel and carry-ons...
Make sure they're big (while still meeting carry-on size limits), soft-sided, and have no visible means of closing completely. Think: rather large tote bags. The airline won't check them, and their soft contours mean they can easily be shoved in overhead bins or under seats.
It is amazing how little some of you know about flying, as if you never flew before in your life and this is all of a suddent new information to you.
-Airlines bump people, it can come at any time, and it is common and has been this way for decades. All passengers who purchase a ticket also agree to terms and conditions, which include getting bumped.
-The pilot rules the plane, what he says goes. The pilot can have anyone removed for any reason. If the reason is incorrect, this is settled after the fact.
-United did not remove anyone, law enforcement did. After the guy refused to leave, United called for law enforcement to remove him.
-The guy was acting like a six year old throwing a temper tantrum, he should have just complied and left, and settled after the fact. Aside from the fact he agreed to the bumping policy when purchasing the ticket, he also refused orders from the flight crew, and he refused orders from law enforcement. Whether he is on the plane or in a store, refusing to comply with orders from enforcement will result in physical force.

I am certain that large medical centers will no longer be booking their staff on United. Many doctors fly with tight lecture and patient care schedules. Often a doctor will fly after doing surgery to give an evening lecture. We don't have to become third world.
