Last time the GOP assumed this was the case was when Bush was president, and your party suffered a crushing defeat in the Congress later on.
The GOP did lose seats in the 2006 election, however, they gained seats in the 2002 election, the first time that has happened in a long time. (The party of the president gaining seats in a mid-term election.)

Yup. But all those red states on a map look impressive. It's easy to forget that some the biggest red states have some of the smallest populations.

The entire population of my home state wouldn't fill up one New York City borough. It's 14th in sate size, and New York is 27th. Neighboring Montana is larger, with an even smaller population. By geography, New York state would quite fill up half of Idaho.

The thought of having to live with Hillary Clinton as President because California thought it was a good idea makes me thankful for the Electoral College.

Our voting system is set up to give more weight to rural voters as it should be. This is because our founding fathers knew the rural vote was more founded in rational reason.

your comparison would be entertaining if it wasn't so full of BULL!! It makes a lot of difference how many states vote one way or the other: it is called electoral votes and that is how our country is governed. Actually what you are saying is the other way around. It makes no difference about those votes in Ca that put your queen over the top; it makes a difference how many blue states went red in November; hard to take isn't it?
Suck it up Buttercup!!! and pick a winner next time around, if possible.

The significance of the map that shows a sea of red in the county level results of the Trump election is that it demonstrates the urban vs rural divide in the country. Urban/suburban folks do not understand rural/small town people, nor do rural/small town people understand urban/suburban folks.

Anyways as for the topic on hand...its because its one of the few ways they can try and make it appear that he has a mandate for extreme changes. Reality is-he doesnt.
I never started hearing it until after the Hillary supporters kept crowing about the popular vote, calling for faithless electors and a host of other stuff.

Besides, crowing about a mandate is only something a rookie politician would do considering they could easily be lame-ducked in 2 years. It's a pretty stupid move that alienates the other party....but enough recent history lessons.
