Public and private hospitals alike are prohibited by law from denying a patient care in an emergency. The Emergency Medical and Treatment Labor Act (EMTLA) passed by Congress in 1986 explicitly forbids the denial of care to indigent or uninsured patients based on a lack of ability to pay.
No chit Dick Tracy- tell us about preventative and diagnostic care so people can avoid ERs and nip potential serious illness down the road. What about medication? Lifesaving
Healthcare is more than emergency care.

I'd love to see your post plastered coast to coast on all Republican campaign ads.
The ignorance of people defending this boggles the mind.
Pre-ACA. My mother felt bad, but couldnt afford to see a Dr. months later when she passed out she was taken to the ER. the lung cancer had metastasized. If she had gone in earleir, she would have had a chance. My mother died.
My friend had type 1 diabetes, and it got bad enough his liver failed. He choose to stop the dialysis and die after losing his job, and healthcare rather then bankrupt his family. He had REAL insurance and worked hard. we're a right to work state, his employer fired him rather then see their insurance costs go up.
People defending this show a level of callousness, and intentional ignorance that I am disgusted by it.

I had to loan my lazy son 1k last month to get examined when he had acute stomach problems. I thought you made six figures?
It is a shame if people are more embarrassed to ask family for help than to rely on coercing strangers.
Would be a shame if your son had just ignored it because 1K is a lot of money and he died. And then someone on the internet tried to imply it was your fault. Boy the person doing that to you, how would you describe him? Fill in the blank:
