This is the danger of religious freedom laws such as the one Pence signed in Indiana.

Too bad Islam doesn't instruct its followers to mutilate the genitalia of young girls.

Genital mutilation is a cultural practice, not a religious practice.

And it's against the law in the United States.

The doctors have no defense.

Interesting, Alonso. Here in the US, most baby boys, including christians, are circumcised. Is that not true in Mexico?

Let us hope that Trump remains President. He is only stupid and a bit daft. Pence is a wanna be religious tyrant ready to wage a grand crusade against any deviation from his delusions.

The Law of the United States is SECULAR Law and has to be free of any religious bias.

I don't see how the law you are citing would somehow legalize FGM given the caveat about other interests.

It's a widespread Christian practice too.

The Indiana situation should have been about freedom of association, not religion. I agree that someone's religion doesn't give them the right to harm unconsenting people/children, but I do believe in someone's right to refuse to bake a gay wedding cake if it's against their religion - but not because it's against their religion...because nobody has the right to force you to do anything for them when you never agreed to it.

FGM predates tge Abrahami religions. It's a tribal/ cultural thing and crosses religions in some areas.

Scripture is silent on the topic.

Egypt banned FGM. Reportedly, the people ignore the law and persist with traditions thousands of years old.

Minimally, these docs should lose their licenses to practice medicine.

I'd like it if all infant genital mutilation would be stopped but in the case of circumcision, both male and female, allowing a minor 'nick' (and I mean really minor, not a scraping) would probably be best as the first step in the move towards getting rid of it altogether. But the goal is to end it for both males and females because no child should be mutilated against their will. Hopefully allowing small nicks and making it easier to get them than taking the child abroad to get it done 'properly' will make the former more common and then eventually they won't see the point of it at all any more.
