I realize he know has the power to do a lot on his own ...but... What I think is going to occur here is that he will present to Trump two plans if he has not already. One for a winning strategy including ultimatums to Pakistan and one for an exit.
I lean conservative, but am for pulling out of Afghanistan -- let them deal with it themselves. We can bomb terrorist training camps or ISIS encampments -- I'm okay with that -- but no boots on the ground there.
I don't want to lose one more soldier there or waste more money.
We will never free that country of Muslim extremism as long as Pakistan gives free reign, looks the other way at its nest of terror training in that NW corner of theirs.

Although its public aims were to dismantle al-Qaeda, and to deny it a safe base of operations in Afghanistan by removing the Taliban from power, the Operation Enduring Freedom itself was a gung-ho operation, carried out without any proper planning and effective strategy to cope with the situation once the initial objectives were achieved. As such, it was doomed to fail.
Like chronic alcoholism, compulsive American meddling in the affairs of other countries can only be recovered from by admitting the problem exists in the first place.
President Trump has partially accomplished this first step by recognizing what has been obvious for years, but an even more enlightened conclusion would be that the war has been “lost” for quite some time now and the only solution is to withdraw U.S. forces as quickly as possible.
