Debatable depending on industry, I supposed. I live the reality of it every day.
We are currently designing the interior for the 2021 full size GM SUV. I'm more on the engineering side than the studio side. We have to provide CAD data that is compliant with all Federal regulations , can be manufactured and installed. Then the "digital sculptures" take our data and surface it. Well , our digital sculpture team is in India. We recently had a program milestone, called "Styling Freeze" about 3 weeks ago. Well it is quite a joke because the data we received from our sculptures is pure garbage. Not necessarily because they don't know what they are doing, it's mostly because of communications. It's hard to style a part up over WebEx.
Several programs ago, they did a beta test. They had our team both do the engineering side AND the digital sculpting side. Guess what ? It was one of the smoothest ran programs that had been done in years, all milestones were met on time and hardly any tooling changes after release. The whole test ended up getting broomed under the rug. We proved we could do a better job in less time then our offshored team members. Why we still have them..I can only guess. Probably because the company has so much invested in offshoring at this point that they are just stuck. That or there are other behind the scenes things that are happening...maybe tax breaks ? Who knows
