Employees and employers have a contractual relationship. If an employee goes on strike, they are of course not paid. If the employer in this case, has a shutdown, they have broken the contract and the employees should be paid. In both cases, there is a major cost penalty to the instigator of the strike or shutdown and this should act as a deterrent to poorly considered actions.
Non-essential government workers should all be fired.
I second that!
No business owner would hire non-essential employees. Why should we?
Let them get a job in the private sector or become essential damn quick!

Give them all a 2-month severance package. Save the people tens of billions each year.
When the idiots in Washington shut things down. Anyone not getting paid should stay home. See how long they fight if the airlines can't fly, Homeland Security is laid off etc.

During a previous shutdown, it was reported that there were certain government offices that were totally closed because NONE of the people there were "Essential" which raises the question of why that office exists in the first place......
Although unless they desperately need the money right now, it seems like more of a hassle because if they receive back-pay (which they will), they have to repay their unemployment.
There are some essential government workers (such as the military, medical staff in VA hospitals, etc) who obviously should get back pay since they did go to work during a shutdown.
But should non-essential government workers who are furloughed get back pay? Shouldn't they have to use their vacation time? Is it fair to the "essential" workers that the non-essential ones are paid just to stay home? Is it fair to the American taxpayer to pay them for not working? And then they probably can argue they need "overtime" to catch up on the work during the shutdown........
I personally think federal workers who didn't actually work during a shutdown shouldn't get paid.
They are not permitted to use any type of leave during a furlough. Technically they are without a job.

I think unemployment pay should be banned nationally, as well as alll OSHA and EEOC laws and regs.
That should make you just delirious with delight, huh?
Agree
individuals are perfectly capable of negotiating their own employment agreements.
