South Koreans apparently eat over a million dogs a year and have quite a few restaurants that specialize in this sort of cuisine. The South Korean government asked these restaurants in Pyeongchang to stop serving dog during the Olympics this year, which formally open in Korea on Friday.

The dog meat restauranteurs in Pyeongchang have refused, and are quite offended that the government would try to threaten their livelihood in this way.

S. Korea dog meat restaurants refuse to stop serving for Olympics

Almost all the dog meat restaurants in South Korea's Pyeongchang county, where the Winter Olympics opening ceremony will be held on Friday, have defied a government request to stop serving the food, an official admitted Thursday.South Koreans are believed to consume about one million dogs a year as a summertime delicacy, with the greasy red meat -- which is invariably boiled for tenderness -- believed to increase energy.

Activists have stepped up campaigns to ban dog consumption, with online petitions urging boycotts of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics over the issue, and protests in Seoul. Local authorities asked the 12 dog meat restaurants in Pyeongchang county to stop serving the food during the Games, in exchange for subsidies. But only two have complied, Pyeongchang County government official Lee Yong-bae told AFP. "We've faced a lot of complaints from restaurant operators that we are threatening their livelihood," he said.

I find these activist groups like PETA more crazy than the people who eat dogs.

South Korea, or any other country, is supposed to put their customs and culture to the side so people feel like they are at home? Nope.

My nephew ate dog before he came back from Korea. (Army)
Just to say he did it.
IIRC he said it wasn't all that great.

Their country, their culture. We don't stop serving hamburgers here when we host the Olympics to humor Hindus that might be visiting.

That's right. I find it to be reprehensible and disgusting, and IMO the Olympics should have never been held there in the first place. That is just one of the reasons. Another would be because of the little deranged kook that lives to the north.

North and South Korea are fielding a single, unified olympic team this year, by the way.

As disgusting as I think eating dogs is, it is there custom and there should be no reason to change it for the foreigners that are there visiting for the games.

If you think about it, if all of the dogs euthanized were given to soup kitchen's that would make quite a bit of food for the homeless. I would rather eat dog than starve to death.
