Ehm - actually, that's pretty much the complete opposite. There was never a law requiring doctors to discuss firearms with their patients. There was, however, a Republican (what else?) attempt at banning doctors from asking question about firearms. Because that's what small government is all about - making specific questions illegal for an MD to ask.
But it was of course about the sacred, beneficial, never-to-be-questioned guns, hallowed be their names, and not being on the side of the guns - always, unwaveringly, and at any cost - will mean no check from the NRA, won't it?
Can't have that. So, set fire to the MDs' First Amendment rights. What do they know, anyway?
Oh, and from your link:
Who's surprised? Anyone?
Ehm, where does it state that there was a law requiring doctors to discuss firearms in MJJersey's link?
Thanks to an executive order from Obama, doctors were allowed to ask about guns in the home. From there, some medical associations encouraged it.
Just because a state tries to ban allowing such questions doesn't mean there was a law requiring the question be asked.
Fail. They're not. I just went for my annual earlier this month. The only question the nurse asked me that was new was regarding if I've had depression....I can't remember exactly how it was worded but it was along those lines. That was it. Now, maybe you can provide factual links to back up your "claim" instead of just making it up, per usual.
Yes, I got asked the depression question, too. But nothing like the OP is suggesting, which is simple BS, and we all know it.
They are also starting to ask if you have guns in your house.
Only if a) You are being treated for depression or substance abuse disorder, or b) they suspect you might be a victim of domestic violence. The answers to these questions fall under HIPAA guidelines and are strictly private.
They are also not required, nor are you required to answer any question you don't want to. Sometimes the information gathering is just for statistics and studies. I found that roughly 13.5% of the local population here admits to smoking. I think that is higher than America at large. Before I submitted the study data, I had to de-identify it. There was no way that anyone could trace those results back to individual patients without my assistance

NLVgal, I don't think anything is strictly private anymore. If it goes on an EMR, the government has access to it.

Or anyone who hacks it.
