Can someone explain to me why a hospital system who receives huge amounts of public money is allowed to fire an employee for a social media post about the death of a felon but a school funded by public money is cool with an employee celebrating the death of some old lady. The double standard is mind boggling.

Corporations can choose how to exercise the concept, to a point. If they are happy to have a crazy lunatic speaking out in public, thinking that people will appreciate their commitment to "Free Speech" then they may tolerate all sorts of idiotic statements from their employees. If they are more interested in the image of being a well run organization who is genuinely concerned about their public image, they will cut ties with people who soil that image rather quickly.
Again, the Free Speech clause of the First Amendment only protects you from prosecution by the Federal government. It does not mean that employers have to put up with your nonsense.
This lady needs to dodge a few more buffet tables.
