Mamie Eisenhower. Quiet, demure, motherly.

Barbara Bush, and I'm not saying that because she died. She always seemed like the grand mother type, very comforting.

If you go by lasting impact,, I go for Lady Bird Johnson. Cleaned interstates and wild flowers do make our country more beautiful than it was before.

If you go by grace, then I would add Laura Bush.

I really give them all in my memory since Mamie Eisenhower kudos for one reason or another

You do realize the question is about the 20th century, not the 21st?

Mamie Eisenhower and Jackie Kennedy I liked.

FYI, Laura Bush was not a First Lady in the 20th century.

However, I am curious about the Laura Bush nominations. I cannot think of anything truly noteworthy she did, except for being an advocate for education and literacy -- but doesn't every intelligent person advocate for that?

Jackie Kennedy for leading by example when it came to courage, for setting an example of grace and manners, for more or less shunning the Kennedy family so she could raise her two kids in a better way.

I'm not sure about the 20th century..but the greatest first lady in history was Dolley Madison.
