NRA: "Women are the largest growing demographic in regards to gun ownership. It should come as no surprise that they are also signing up for concealed carry classes in record numbers."
This is good news. Women are taking steps to protect themselves. Law enforcement cannot be depended upon to be there when you need them, and it may take up to twenty minutes or more after a 911 call for anyone to arrive. By that time, it may be too late.
I support responsible women and men who get the proper education/training on using firearms, regardless of their political views, religion, or orientation.
I belong to a large, private gun club in which I've been member for ten years. Prior to that I was a member of a different club for about fourteen years, so I have witnessed the population of a few large clubs over the past twenty four plus years. In the past five to seven years we have seen a huge surge in women members. Often, they are first time shooters, and most of them take advantage of the NRA sponsored safety, and shooting courses our club offers. They are an asset to the club. They follow the safety rule, learn quickly, and become very good, accurate shooters, and sometimes competitors. Many have bought, and shoot AR-15's due to its small, low recoiling and less powerful round. They are easy to shoot accurately for long range sessions, as they don't beat you up.

This is what I have been told is the reason for the AR-15's popularity, especially among women. It is light weight and easy to handle, and as you said, "low recoil."
According to the Militia Act of 1903, Dick Act, your were suppose to be well regulated in the use and mechanics of your arms long before the age of 17. You were also to buy as many arms as you could afford.

If they ban them it would be sexist. It is a good rifle for women, smaller people or the disabled who might not have a lot of upper body strength. And they would take it away from this vulnerable population.
