I agree. However, don't forget that from many other people's perspective - you aren't free and you don't have liberty if you fear for your child's safety in public schools. We all think of a government being oppressive, but forget that we are our own worst oppressors.

This pertains to school shootings only. I think the first thing is to start with the parents. They need to observe their children's behavior. Most of the mental illness things start early. Just paying attention to them will give off some clues. I have hobbies that I enjoy, but once that hobby or interest starts to manifest into a perverted obsession it no longer is a hobby but a problem.
For example, seeing a goth kid is one thing, seeing a goth kid that obsessed with firearms , killing and posts these things on social media might just be a larger problem then just being a "goth" kid.

The schools also need to do these things, and not be afraid to intervene into them. I have had experience in the past when the school just didn't care or not want to do anything.

My thought is you can eliminate guns, arm teachers, turn schools into fortresses and these things will still occur. They attack schools because they are easy targets, if the school cannot be attacked they will move onto some other soft target where students or people congregate.

Whether it's a school shooting or elsewhere they were planned for weeks, months or even years. It's that planning and some luck that determines the effectiveness. If someone is determined to kill a lot of people with a well thought out plan they will kill a lot of people and there isn't a thing you can do to stop it.

The means and location are secondary and focusing efforts on that is a fruitless effort. We need to identify and stop these individuals before they act.

You don't. You just need to spot and monitor the crazy person before they decide to do a crazy thing.
Why is it that after every one , or virtually every one of these killings we see the picture of the person that did it and we think to ourselves that it was obvious the person was deranged and was only a matter of time before something happened.

Easy peasy; Close the public detention centers.
Heard of any private school shootings lately?

You can't, but SOME of these shootings could certainly be prevented. As one poster pointed out, you have to stop these shooters before they even act.

Yeah a pre-crime unit of sorts. What could possibly go wrong there?

You ever been to a country without public schools?
I'll take the school shootings over a general population that can't read or write.

That's another thing, I really wish the media would simply stop naming them, showing their photo, etc. One of the big attractions for these people is the attention.
