It's another example of the unintended consequences of releasing a technology like the Internet into the world. Society in the past was healthier, because it was very difficult to be anonymous when expressing a racist or hateful or destructive opinion or idea. Now, these sick personalities are free to say whatever they want, find one another to form virtual alliances, and are able to spread corruption in ways that were naturally damped out in the past. We have no idea where this is going to go. Technology providers of course are assuring us that the brave new world is going to be fantastic. But remember, they are trying to sell us something - and when have you ever trusted a salesman?
was is really healthier just because thoughts were suppressed? I would say no. Probably just more fake.
I haven't used Yahoo! since about 2012/2013. My passwords no longer work and every time I call to get them reset, it doesn't work. I've been on Gmail ever since.
Most social media is infested by Russian trolls, racists, extremists and the like. The trick is to recognize them for what they are and call them out.
Not just social media. They’re on every aspect of the internet. YouTube comments, news comments, political sites, adult site comments under streaming videos, Facebook groups, message boards, review sites, Yelp, Airbnb, trip advisor, online video games, online computer games, etc
Anonymity makes people post crazy stuff.
The trick is to ignore it altogether. No one can deal with the stress and heartache to respond to millions of trolls. Calling them out only recruits more to join in.
Seven years ago this article was published, and it has gotten 100000x worse since. I personally give Yahoo credit for electing Trump and ushering in this new wave of open racism and sexism. The comment sections there are a nightmare now, overwhelmed with hate-filled trolls who will go ballistic on any article about someone of color or a female liberal.
The real question is...why? Why is it so bad at Yahoo? What can Yahoo do to fix the problem?
I don’t get what the problem is. If you don’t like it don’t use Yahoo.
Or do you just want to try to control other people?
I still waiting to know that those who are offended, what do you want?
Do you want that speech made illegal and people put in jail ?
What do you want?
My solution was to ignore it.
Someone said to “call it out.” That’s laughable. As if the internet is some battlefield where a person must comment on every post of every site that’s posting something offensive.
