Many people predicted this but of course the Left/Democrats will never learn. Watch them try to blame something else or enact another bound-to-fail law to try to fix their failed law. It will be a never ending vicious cycle with them. Now these workers will have no job at all. Leftist excuses in 3...2...1

Predictable.

The usual end result of liberal policies.

The true minimum wage is $0. For business owners it's negative infinity.

I sure wish leftists would learn basic economics.

From the article...

In explaining his decision to close following 28 years of high-volume business, owner Charles Milite told the New York Post, “The times have changed in our industry. The rents are very high and now the minimum wage is going up and we have a huge number of employees.”

Milite employs about 150 people at his breakfast, lunch, and dinner operation, which also puts him over the Affordable Care Act’s costly mandate that establishments with 50 or more employees provide health insurance.

The Coffee Shop is part of The Gotham City Restaurant Group, which also owns Flats Fix, the former employer of socialist darling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The American employee is too expensive - all thanks to over reaching government.

The government and businesses are not responsible for ensuring people make enough to live on. That's the responsibility of the individual to make him or herself valuable enough to earn a decent living.

I love this line at the end...

New York’s new look will be vacant storefronts between an occasional Pret-a-Manger or the public restroom formerly known as Starbucks.

Restaurants where staff earn tips are subject to a $5 per hour tip credit, but must pay $10 per hour. That is nearly double the 2014 minimum wage of $8 with a $3 tip credit.

For many businesses, this egregious law is not just an inconvenience, it is simply unaffordable. The most recent victim is long-time staple, The Coffee Shop, a tremendously popular Union Square bar and café favored by many celebrities.

The rents are very high and now the minimum wage is going up and we have a huge number of employees

Better read the article first.

They are subjected to paying to $10 per hr right now. $2 more than in 2014 yet find that wage too high
All they must do is add a tip jar for everyone.

$10 is INSANE wages. I am shocked that is all they're paying
No one can live on $10 per hr here in California.

Our wage is going up tp $12 starting 2019 raising each year until $15.
Prices raised here, yes.. Businesses fail frequently in our area and the high rents play into that. The article also mentions the HIGH RENTS for this particular restaurant as contributing to the problem. The restaurant industry is only ONE type of business affected so many others will remain standing. Especially those which do not open up in expensive areas of New York.

Close the coffee shop or move it to a cheaper location. If it had as many celebs as it boasts, then there would be no problem with the wages. This article entails a heading without any real backing to what they are trying to push.

Oh man... Several eateries closed. In NYC. Where there are thousands of eateries.

Skyrocketing rents had nothing to do with it. [sarcasm]

Im against $15 but there are many factors than just wages.

I know a guy who gets a hideous amount of money to clean a canvas awning in NYC. The building owner wants to get rid of the awning. NYC permit + lowest bid contractor wants like a million dollars to remove it. IIRC the permit was like 100K. This is a $10K-15K job in NJ.

Add source fail. You could go to Huff to get a counter argument.

One restaurant "The Coffee Shop," closes in NYC is the fact.

The rest of the article is wild speculation, doom and gloom, slippery slope stuff by the right wing author.

The real irony here is that "The Coffee Shop" apparently catered to the left wing elite celeb crowd.

I hope you are really not that thick...

It will not be sustainable for numerous small places.

This is great for McD's and the big nationwide chains that has the loot to replace employees with kiosks and keep operating costs down. These regulations will knock out much of the competition.

It is not several eateries. There are many. And this is only the beginning as the full $15 do not get implemented until the end of the year. The flood of closures will be seen starting next year. This article just used a well known one as an example.
