Comments on news stories are almost always stupid.
Having said that, some people have come to be irritated that the knee jerk response to any tragedy or difficulty is "Prayers." It's seen as a do-nothing platitude whose only purpose is to make the poster feel better about the situation.

Pray or don't pray, but posting "prayers" is useless and can be quite annoying depending on the context.

.. ok, as long a you are OK with someone telling you they are praying to Allah, quoting the Quran, or saying Allah will provide, to show their concern with your misfortune

I think this may be the key thing.
Anyone can pray, for anyone, at any time. Great. It gets annoying when it becomes a matter of almost bragging about it. Announcing to the world that you are going to pray is the right's version of virtue signalling.
I would never attack anyone for praying. But since you asked, OP, that's my answer.
On this sort of same note, how many times do you see even just here on CD where people post prayers or condolences to people who most probably never will see them, like following a news report about some calamity ?

Perhaps, as I mentioned earlier, it would be more comforting to simply be presented with the middle finger?
A prayer from someone might not be much, but it's a whole lot more than someone sitting in a 15 room mansion or driving in their Lexus nodding and saying, "This is what I pay taxes for." One of the many things taxes are is an excuse to never lift a finger for anyone or anything.
