That's a bad assumption that you are making. I am becoming increasingly convinced that there is little understanding of the value of a free press, nor of the fundamental upheaval that would occur if it is indeed destroyed - particularly with the hardline Trump supporters. They are playing with fire like foolish children.
When you say "free press" you are saying they should be free to lie and push fake news aren't you.

In the last few years, Trump has been joined by at least two billionaires who are determined to exploit cracks in the wall of defense around the press... This mistrust has been growing for a long time, but it was stoked by Trump during the campaign. He called the reporters who covered him “scum” and whipped up yelling and booing crowds.
I think what Trump wants is media similar to the media in Russia...Totally state controlled...Although I often hear Trump and his followers say that mainstream media is fake I've never seen even one of them back that statement up with a specific example.

If you haven't seen any specific examples of fake news coming from mainstream media you're either lying or so blindly partisan you refuse to see it and there's no point in trying to show you again.

Why are Conservatives constantly harping on about small government but now they want something approaching big government since they don't like what the media says. It just makes them look like hypocrites.

This is a bizarre post. Are you so naive to believe that the press is “free” when most of the news and TV stations are owned by a very small grp of billionaires? Do you really believe the Washington Post didnt change after Bezos bought it? What about Comcast who owns NBC? You really believe there has been no change in content or opinion after the Comcast acquistion? You are very naive or very blind.
