I think you are right. It has already happened to the GOP.

It is now a party of extremists. The head of the party--Trump--gets all of his news from Fox and puts out all his views through Fox--they are basically state news. He also believes and repeats conspiracy theories originating with the alt-right. Establishment conservatives are leaving the party in droves.

We actually have a bunch of extremists running the country-somewhat tempered by the sane people trying to keep a grip on the lunatic-in-chief.

If Sanders had won and taken over the Democrats, they would be the extremists.

Trump really is not even an extremeist. Certainly not as extreme as a third of the members of Congress.

Trump is just an *******

I voted somewhere in between. I try not to hate right wing people. But I don't understand them. I feel very depressed when I think about it too much. It's a sad and frightening feeling that people can be THIS different and have such strikingly different wants, beliefs and values while living in the same country.

I wish no ill will on anyone. I just don't understand. I try to pay little attention to politics most of the time. Otherwise, I get upset.

Not at all true, hence the Walkaway movement. Obama, and Hillary were far left radicals. Fortunately, they no longer matter at all.

Where is the option where both parties need to be buried in a shallow grave?

The opposite (liberals/Democrats) view me as the enemy so I have no choice than to reciprocate the feeling.

And since we live in a 2 party system of polar opposites, I don’t expect Americans to ever agree on anything when it comes to controversial political subjects.

Libertarians (Gary Johnson) gave it a shot and it was a complete disaster.

I honestly don't think the average democrat is as marxist as the extreme wing of the party leads people to believe. Most are democrat simply because they notice that republicans tend to help and favor corporations first, at least at the federal level. Similarly many republicans vote republican because they see the democrats as anti-freedom and socialist.. I vote republican because I see censorship on college campuses, unfair treatment of males, and all the protesting over pretty much manufactured issues. I used to care a lot about legal pot but I really don't anymore.. I'm take it or leave it on that one.

At the state level I think gridlock is best. Scott Walker was great for Wisconsin. He breathed fresh air into what was a state that was turning into another California.. business hostile, high tax.. however I wouldn't want the republicans to get total control either. I don't like the extreme wing of either party that much. I prefer moderates.

Seems to me any political entity that gets too much power eventually becomes oppressive and tries to censor the opposition. It used to be the right that wanted censorship because they thought things like naked women and swearing were "immoral" and now it's the democrats that want to censor anyone who doesn't tow the SJW party line... it goes back and forth. It takes a more well informed, intelligent individual to actually want to allow debate and freedom of speech regardless of the issue.
