They stir the pot because that is what the voters want them to do.

One can tell you lose arguments when you start cursing or using very strong adjectives rather than point to actions you disagree with. Why should the U.S. let in any comers?

Oh for sure, sometimes you HAVE to vote against a particular party because of a toxic situation caused by 1 or more individuals in key positions. It's why I voted for Obama. It's not that I loved him or thought he was special, but I felt it necessary to shed some specific Republicans because of the path they were on. I had regret a few years later when I saw the new path which is why I voted for Trump and I haven't yet seen a downside to the path he's favoring. Probably because he isn't a D or an R and it's all new territory for us. People are scared of things they don't understand or have personal experience with. Younger ones mostly.

-Reasonable gun control laws. Limits on magazine size, stricter background checks, etc.
-Most social issues. Although I am socially conservative, I think the laws should be liberal.

The problem I have with Democrats is they are too extreme, even on the issues I agree with them on. For example, some will say that global warming is our biggest threat or guns should be banned. This is not the way to get conservative leaning people, like myself, on their side.
The 3 points I made bold are what I agree with you on this list. That said, if a person is raised in a very liberal or very conservative household, it isn't easy to change parties because that person has that upbringing so ingrained in them.

There are more unaffiliated/ Independents than Republicans or Democrats.

There are endless brands within each party.
