Should there be mandatory jail time for anyone who accidentally kills someone with a firearm? If we have rights to own guns, shouldn't those rights come with responsibilities?

all rights come with responsibilities, and there are consequences for accidental shootings. granted they are civil in nature, but there are consequences none the less.

We already have laws on the books for this. Now, if a kid accidentally shoots his buddy's Dads head off getting a gun out of the truck?

This happened where I lived. What purpose would be jailing someone who is so traumatized they will probably off themselves.

The Daddy needs to be charged for allowing a minor access to the gun when it wasn't safe to do so.

There is always an adult somewhere that has been careless.

I wish gun rights people would fight more to have justice done for these accidents. But the fear -- and maybe it is justified with some folks calling for bands on all guns -- is that any kind of condition may lead to the eventual banning of all guns.

It's a big leap, it's fear, NRA has done a great job of marketing that fear for 40 years.

There has to be some things that can be done that allow good honest responsible people be able to choose to own guns for sport, protection or hobby and to help cut down on whackos, criminals and those that aren't responsible, that are careless from having the same access.

There is just no will to see if there is a happy medium it seems.

What part of "shall not be infringed" leads you to believe that there should be any sort of negotiation? For the last three decades I've watched as guns were demonized, regulated, banned, and confiscated - with zero demonstrable effect on firearms crime. Any argument for gun control laws is a) unconstitutional and b) idiotic by definition. There has not been one major piece of gun control legislation which actually had the result that the lawmakers said it would. Not one.

I'm not aware of any blanket mandatory sentences for accidental death by any other means, so why would a firearm be different? Circumstances matter.

Why limit it to guns? Should there be mandatory jail time for anyone who accidentally kills someone with a car? How about if someone accidentally kills someone cutting a tree down with a chainsaw? You're just proving anti gun nuts don't care about saving lives, you simply hate guns and want to get rid of them, end of story.

How about you try ENFORCING existing laws before passing new, more restrictive, punitive laws against those who aren't breaking the law?

The Dad got his head shot off. That work for you?

You ok with LE entering your house without a warrant? That's what it sounds like.

I've never been really keen on the word "mandatory"..... especially when it comes to sentencing guidelines.

It's kind of like intentionally barring the use of rational thinking and common sense.

Every situation is different and should be delt with with the circumstances in mind

Sure, as long as we have mandatory life sentences for anyone who provides someone else with a controlled substance that results in an overdose and loss of life. That should cull down the worthless inner city population.
