Last month, Chinese Rear Adm. Lou Yuan told an audience in Shenzhen that sinking a pair of U.S. aircraft carriers would settle issues of sovereignty in the South China Sea.
“What the United States fears the most is taking casualties,” he said, noting that 5,000 service members would die on each sunken carrier.
The report from the Global Times notes that the activation of the DF-26 comes just "after a US warship trespassed into China's territorial waters off the Xisha Islands (Paracel Islands) in the South China Sea on Monday," a reference to a legal freedom-of-navigation operation conducted by destroyer USS McCampbell.
"We urge the United States to immediately cease this kind of provocation," the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in response, accusing the US of having "gravely infringed upon China's sovereignty."
"We will be on high alert and will closely monitor the air and sea situation to strongly defend our sovereignty and security," the ministry spokesman added.
Here is the thing, If China thinks they can attack and sink 2 aircraft carriers, and call it a day they are VASTLY misgauging what the US would do in response. While we do not like taking loses, once we got attacked that way we would view it as a full on non-nuclear war. And we have spent a TON of money to be able to really do that well. They very clearly do not understand us at all. And that, is the most dangerous thing of all.
They won't attack anyone, China's problem is they can't afford a war even if they act like they can. It isn't just the financial costs of war, but they don't have the public support for it.
This is them putting on airs over the Huawei arrest

I tend to agree. However, we have a weak President.

Wow for once we are in complete agreement. The US is pretty reserved and pull our punches when dealing with our enemy. WE seem to think we can make them our friends after bombing them. That said, that is right up until someone pulls a Pearl Harbor on us. Then the gloves come off, both parties unite and we go after the enemy with a vengeance. Gulf war II for example. (Even if we picked on the wrong bad guy).
Many have claimed that they would sink our carriers. They seem to forget what we can do in retaliation even if by some chance they succeeded. The simple attempt would be enough for us to start laying waste. They also seem to forget that we actually do have some powerful allies in the region. Allies that really need for us to keep China in check. China may have more boots on the ground but much of their equipment is in the realm of antiques.
Put yourself in their shoes for once. How would you folks like China sticking their nose in a border or water territory dispute in our hemisphere? Answer: you’d all be stark raving mad about it. You don’t want the Chinese military gallivanting around this continent, do you?
The Chinese have long term hegemonic goals in their hemisphere, and frankly, what’s wrong with that? We’re the only nation that can have a Monroe Doctrine?

That's part of it, the other part is their culture is thousands of years old, ours is hundreds of years old, and they, like most of the world, hate our arrogance. When I hear people talk about underestimating American resolve,
I'm reminded that any engagement would be one where we are fighting in their backyard, which is half a world away, against an enemy that would be suicidally brave, with a military that is exhausted from non stop rotations to Iraq and Afghanistan.
If anyone is not to be underestimated, it is the Chinese. If they used killer satellites to disable our electronic communications, effectively placing a protective bubble around their assets, all of our superior technology becomes worthless. And that is only a single scenario, there are others.
