YouTube announced plans on Wednesday to remove thousands of videos and channels that advocate for neo-Nazism, white supremacy and other bigoted ideologies in an attempt to clean up extremism and hate speech on the service. What about freedom of speech? Because YouTube is a private corporation, these videos are not protected under the First Amendment, so they can pull any videos they want. I support the right for people to be racists and bigots if they so insist upon it. But if a private entity pulls material like this, is it considered censorship?

The problem is that they will selectively enforce this.

Private companies can censor all they want. Even this forum which is privately owned can remove your posts if they so choose and ban you to boot.

How does YouTube decide what to pull? What is "hate speech?" What is an "extreme view?" How exactly is that defined? This is a really bad idea.

They’ll just ban all the conservative videos. It’s okay, other sites are now competing with YouTube the big brother.

I think Steven Anderson's channel applies, being that he advocates the death penalty for LGBT people.

Anyways, conservatives still have GodTube. I also believe Vimeo is more lenient on what can be posted compared to YouTube.

Yep. There are a LOT of video uploading sites...none as big as youtube but its all gonna come around eventually. Youtube,Twitter,FB eventually will just be leftist echo chambers.

More Nonsense from the NY Times. They absolutely do not cite any specifics. We all know they like to just make stuff up, like CNN.

It's fodder for the easily influenced I guess. I don't know why any critically thinking adult would give any credence to NY Times "reporting" these days.

Which is their right and their obligation-- to create a product that pleases their stockholders.
