One of the reasons why it is more important (for the American people) for the POTUS to reveal tax returns is unlike Congress, Presidents are relatively exempt from conflict-of-interest laws.
A little 'sunlight' goes a long way in instilling trust.

Starting with Bush, there is nothing a Republican can do that will make Democrats happy.
He could have released them and Democrats would want Congressional hearings on the IRS on who audited them.

Knowing Mushroom Donny, if his tax returns proved he were innocent of any inappropriate financial behavior, he would be bragging about how transparent he is and how no other president has ever been so open as he has.
