There isn't enough context here. Did the two have words? And what in the world could have been found in the company's investigation that made termination the route to go?

That’s the missing piece. What did the company investigation find? I see no way they can take any action on the photo.
When meme is reality. Hopefully this is an indirect blessing and he gets a better job than before, because this is just foul. Really foul. I know because it’s a meme actual white supremacists use it but since 99% of the public uses it as well it’s always better to assume 1 trillion time out of 10 that the person using it has no ill intentions. Hell black people use it all the time it’s an American thing not a racial thing at all.
