Give me a freakin break. I started watching horror movies when I was about 12. Like people are going to be scarred after watching Grease?
A musical about 1950s teens is very disturbing to the woke. If it was about African Americans killing each other over gang turf in West Garfield Park though, it would win an Oscar
I sat down with my teen to watch Grease over the holidays - in fact on the screening on the BBC mentioned in the article. I loved the film when I was a teenager (I was born in the 70s) but will admit to having forgotten some of the words in Grease Lightning. I can’t say I was happy with it, I don’t think I understood the words when I was a teenager. She definitely understood them now and was horrified, I wouldn’t tolerate her using those curse words in my presence. It’s hardly cancel culture to be raising concerns about something that wasn’t taboo back then but is now.
I’m assuming they’ll be blocked on here but here we go...
“You know that ain’t no **** we’ll be getting lots of tit”
“You are supreme, the chicks will cream...”
“I can get off my rocks”
“She’s a real ***** wagon”
The Daily Mail is a trash rag but if you read the article, the concerns raised were about the fact it’s a PG and I believe it was shown later afternoon/early evening, which isn’t appropriate for the audience watching on Boxing Day, my 4 year old was watching with us (although oblivious). After 9pm, anything is fair game but even I was surprised they let that slip through the net
We knew all that was in there when we were kids in the ‘70s. I recall very little content just for kids back then. Everything was risqué. One of the most popular movies for young teenage girls was Little Darlings, a movie where everyone at a summer camp bets on which of two girls can lose their virginity first. I’m not even sure what got an R rating back then because you can watch movies from that era and there is some nudity and cussing in a lot of PG movies.
Just don’t point out what it’s saying and it will most likely sail over your kids’ head like it did you when you were young. Or watch High School Musical where they didn’t even kiss.
No. They sing them, doesn’t make it any better and the point is that they didn’t show the kid friendly version on Boxing Day at 5pm when families were watching it. We literally watched the film they referred to in that article that was on as scheduled. Boxing Day in the U.K. is still very much part of the Christmas holiday. Families watch tv, relax, and ‘eat, drink and be merry’. I even called my 14 year old down to watch it with me having no memory of that song. Which was the point of the article. We have OFCOM guidelines here, showing the film with that content violated them which is what lead to complaints, which is what lead to the Daily Mail creating a story about ‘woke’ people and cancel culture. Objecting to my 14 year old hearing John Travola singing about pu$$y wagons and chicks creaming at dinner time when a kid friendly version (if one exists) could be shown doesn’t make me one of the ‘woke snowflakes’. The BBC dropped the ball and deserved the backlash. It’s typical Daily Mail spin using a legitimate complaint system to rile up usual people, and judging from this post it’s working.
Nope, those people say it should never be shown on TV again...
And the people born after 2012 will speak just as LOUD and CLEAR on what THEY want. And it probably won't be what YOU want, and you'll get your panties in a wad. See how that works?
I find crap like this pretty unwatchable and offensive... I doubt any cares will be given to my offense. It matters who you offend, not whether it's offensive. You can offend christians and conservatives. (I'm not actually all that offended, I just find these raunchy movies more in bad taste and not funny)
It would be fascinating of the left suddenly went PC when it came to the over-sexualization of our culture. I might actually support that.
"over-sexulation today"?!!
Are not the dems and liberals the ones who scream for men to be executed for such things as slapping a woman on the butt or 'coping a feel' or even looking at a female in a sexually threatening way?! Heck, the Puritans were not even that strict!
If the lyrics to WAP offend you, you should read the lyrics to "Greased Lightning" lol.
WAP doesn't really offend me. I find it interesting... it makes me wonder just what has happened in America since I left long ago to live in Japan. WAP is pretty much straight porn, but it's admired by feminists and apparently considered appropriate, even for children. NPR rates it the best song of year. I don't get it.
Yes, "Greased Lightning" also has the word "p*ssy" in it, and some other mildly raunchy lyrics but no, it's nothing like WAP.
I thought it was a lot of fun with some catchy tunes...
I watched the Wu-Tang Clan documentary, and one of them, I believe it was Rakewon, talked about how they loved Grease, and laughed, because they saw all that **** in Staten Island, mimic the movie!
It is pretty dated. I’d be ok with deleting the offensive scenes. It is overly white, that’s for sure. Later live productions have been more inclusive, thankfully.
What about it being an all white cast is troublesome for you? You don't see me bitching about all black casts. Or Indian movies. Or Asian films. This is an incredibly shallow and pointless position to take ya know. Makes you seem off kilter IMO
