We need the SS tax rates, plus retirement ages to be tabled perpetually, meaning changes should occur perhaps every 5 years based solely on updated average years of benefits collected, average life expectancy, etc. Not subject to political votes nor pressures from senior citizens on politicians. Average years collected must stay stagnant.

The same should occur with Medicare, which should retain a stagnant mix, meaning the % paid by insured should stay stagnant. If costs rise 20%, raise their premium 20%.

Objectify the process-permanently and codify that.

Do you really think that any Congress would basically one year say "Oh we are not going to fund Social Security this year"?

But what makes you think Social Security will be around when you retire anyways? Or that they won't keep increasing the age for you to receive it. Calculate how much you put in over your life, and what you will be taking out and you may be asking yourself what happened to all of that money anyways.
It's not that Congress would deliberately choose to defund it one year... more like they would just let it expire because they don't get around to reauthorizing it.

Remember, Social Security and Medicare are programs we all contribute to. You would lose the money you contributed if Congress can't keep the program going. Our contributions are what makes these programs different from other government spending programs.

BTW these are not investment programs where you can compare the amount you put in with the amount you get out. Social security is meant to always be there whether the economy or the stock market or your own personal savings are up or down during your retirement years. The ultimate safety net. Medicare is health INSURANCE which you pay for partially during your working years and partially during your retirement years.

Why? Are you contributing to the military in anticipation of later personal benefits from the military? Military funding comes from general taxes, not from earmarked money that is collected specifically for a personal program.

A Republican senator, up for re-election in a swing state, publicly floats an idea that raises doubts about the availability of social security and Medicare. What kind of death wish does the Republican Party have? This November should be a golden opportunity for them, and I see them blowing it.

I have a better idea. Use some of that billions and trillions of slush fund they've passed to actually RESTORE the SS Trust Fund, which I believe was looted during either LBJ or Nixon administration.

An actual fund. That collects interest. What a concept.

The politicians have their own cadillac healthcare too...they nixed Obamacare, remember? I think they get pensions and healthcare for life after just 2 terms...4 years in the House.

actually I contributed 27 years of blood, sweat, and tears to the military....

the point is why should welfare, or social safety net programs be mandatory, yet needed things like the DOD, and DOT (infrastructure) is NOT a mandatory spending side

do you realize the 75% of our budget is social safety net programs

Once again election season draws near. The old SS scare is as tiresome as the 'ism' accusations. Ugh, how old are you? Do you have a short memory ?

Absolutely. They will never eliminate it but as you can see what you can buy with the payment steadily decreases over time.

It has stopped progress in trying to save two bankrupt programs since the Reagan era, when Democrats didn't demagogue it.

The only ones trying to destroy the programs are the Democrats with their refusal to cooperate on shoring them up. They are going to wait so long, benefits will have to be cut.
