Unfortunately, one of the costs of fame is that you are at greater risk from certain fringe individuals. Hopefully Salman Rushdie is able to recuperate.
Fringe individuals? They've murdered several people connected to his works and he has an active death warrant out on him by a major religion.
There are literally tens of millions of people in this world that if he walked into their neighborhood he'd be murdered.
In the US, we have "fringe individuals" people like abortion clinic bombers or ANTIFA arsonists or people that go to a SCOTUS judges home with a gun.
Other parts of the world and recent emigrees from there have entirely different world views as to what is fringe or absolutely normal and righteous. (Not a knock on islam, just where those countries are relative to the west. The west was there once too.)
I am worried about all the assassination attempts and plots from Iran lately. They just foiled an Iranian plot to assassinate John Bolton as well. Are we starting to see a rise in Islamic extremism again?
Really? Her critics are so vile! All for claiming trans women do not have periods and shouldn’t be listed as women in rape statistics when they raped with a penis.
As for Rushdie, this is very strange. Didn’t they just foil an Iranian plot to kill John Bolton? Now they stabbed Salmam Rushdie after all these years?
Edit: I wrote the previous post and it went into the ether so I wrote this one, and lo and behold, the other one is here. Weird.

I hope Rushdie survives this attack. He is such a courageous man. A translator of Satanic Verses was killed in 1991 and at least two have been injured in deadly attacks.
I read an article today that said his Japanese interpreter was killed and his Swedish interpreter shot, and they attempted it on a few others and actually killed 37 people in Turkey going after their intended target, Rushdie’s translator Aziz Nesin. All those attacks happened long ago.
It reminds me of the fatwa episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Funny stuff. Rushdie made an appearance at the end, but not on this clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMGZEnnLi3U
The good thing is it happened in the US and will probably get better ER care than numerous other countries. Wonder what the bail on this suspect is going to be although being the nature he should be Gitmoed.
My bet is that D.A. Bragg will argue for a non-carceral alternative.

As a lawyer, I wonder if New York courts would allow someone to sue to enforce their entitlement to fatwa payment or if Bragg would to that for them?

Rushdie was protected for decades by the UK authorities, through MI5 safe houses and armed police, however he later rejected the protection.
As for his current state following the stabbing it is not believed to be good and he is now on a ventilator and unable to speak, he will likely lose one eye; whilst the nerves in one of his arms have been severed; and his liver has been stabbed and severally damaged.

Mr Rushdie has suffered years of Islamist death threats after writing The Satanic Verses, published in 1988.
Police detained a suspect named as Hadi Matar, 24, from Fairview, New Jersey.
New York State Police said the suspect ran onto the stage and attacked Mr Rushdie and an interviewer at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York state.
"Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged," his agent, Andrew Wylie said.
No motive or charges have yet been confirmed by police, who are in the process of obtaining search warrants to examine a backpack and electronic devices found at the centre.
Mr Rushdie was stabbed at least once in the neck and in the abdomen, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, by helicopter.
