I just wanted to get an idea how many people who post on these threads about continued occupation and war in Iraq actually have something to lose from this conflict. I myself have a brother who is fresh out of basic and certainly bound for Iraq. How about the rest of you. Please share with us your thoughts and feelings about this ever lengthening conflict.

I work around a military community.
A great number of my friends are or have served in Iraq/Afghanistan.

I have several friends who are either currently serving in Iraq, are on a break between tours, or have been before. One friend was seriously injured as a Marine in Fallujah. Another served 3 tours in the Middle East (Iraq, Afghanistan, and they finally let up on him a little with Kuwait) before he was 21.

Every last one of them is against the War and several are active with Iraq Veterans Against the War and similar veterans organizations.

What's maybe the most horrifying is that my friend who was injured believes that if his family hadn't paid to get him non-military medical recovery, he doesn't believe he'd be able to walk right now. You'd never know now that his leg was shattered.

Just a couple of acquaintances. None of my family members are serving (at least not that I'm aware of).

Yes, I have been hearing a lot of similar stories of injured soldiers coming home to far less than a warm reception. Being denied medical care and benefits is becoming par for the course of our injured American troops. But this type of treatment is not anything new. During the Great Depression after WW1 the veterans had a sit in in Washington D.C. because the government would not pay them for their service in the war. They were living in shanties and eating whatever they could find. The government called in the Army and ordered them to attack the veterans. Many were killed for their non-violent protest. It is just another example of the fact that our government does not care about our troops. They are just a means to and end for the elite running this country.

Fifth Tour - 4 in Iraq. 1 in Afganistan (current) - Son

2 tours - 2 in Kuwait - Daughter-in-Law

At one point for 11 months - my son and his wife were mutually deployed. I became "Mr. Mom" to a 7 and 9 year old.

Personally, while not a member of the military, I have been privileged to visit Iraq twice - once with a USO contingent and another time with the Red Cross - both times we were delivering "Care Packages". One of the visits was to the same base my son was at - it was a nice reunion.

this is a true story so bear with me. My sister's boyfriend has been to Iraq many times but not as a member of the military. He is one of those private contractors (I suspect Blackwater) who is off to Iraq next month for the 5th time now and from what I have been told his yearly contracts bring him from $100k to 200k. He is able to maintain two households ( his ex's wife & daughters and my sister's as well). I have not approached him regarding this since I have always been against the Iraq War but it sickens me that our troops are getting paid dirt compared to what he is getting for almost the same work.

On another note I want to say that we can support our troops but disagree on the policy in Iraq. Some ask it can't be done but it is quite simple. Our troops are doing their job regardless of policy but those of us on the outside see things for what they are. I despise the Iraq War policy but have unwavering support for our troops and the healthcare when they come home. God bless our troops.
