A number of areas have decriminalized theft below a certain amount.

So, they just go in and steal it, someone then lists it up for sale on-line.

Illinois raised the amount for "felony theft" from 300 to 1,000.

Just walk right on out the door with it.

There’s workers in the scanner areas, and there’s video of the person doing the scanning. It’s quite simple

Stores with a membership basis and tight admission will be more popular if the state and local prosecutors won't do their jobs.

Why don't these stores have Security watching the door? And by Security, I mean someone with the authority to stop and hold a thief until the police can be called. Seems paying that extra salary would be cheaper than the cost of all that shoplifted merchandise.

Stores used to have many more employees and safeguards... many eyes always watching. Until they decided that live employees cost too much. Now they wonder why shoplifting has increased. SMH.

Private security may be far more commonplace in the future.

So simple that people are walking out the door with stolen merchandise and nobody there to stop them. The system you describe is obviously not working.

Who is watching the video that the scanner is recording? Evidently nobody.

I also think severe punishments for even petty theft (up to and including execution or amputation) will be making a comeback.

Lol. Those people aren’t going to the scanners which you blamed for the huge losses due to shoplifting…but do tell how much money is being lost due to self checkout crime?

They’re filling their carts, bypassing the checkouts, and leaving the stores due to being the loser criminals that they are.

Like a parasite.
And the residents of these small towns are/were utterly complicit in this. They sold out their towns for "bargain shopping!" LOL.
