George Washington: established the precedent for a strong central government; establishing the supremacy of the national govt. over the states (Lighthouse Act 1789 - the federal govt. nationalized state and privately owned lighthouses and buoys over the objection of several states); federal control of the economy (Tariff Act 1789; first Bank of the US); enforcement of federal tax law in a state (suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion).

Abraham Lincoln: the US's first socialist president: established the route and provided federal funding of the Transcontinental Railroad when the private sector couldn't find the money or decide on the route - paying the railroads to do the work (the federal govt. issued bonds paying 6% interest); nationalization of the printing of currency (before his administration banks printed currency, the federal govt. minted coins); free college eduction through land grant colleges; free land through the homestead acts.

FDR: preserved the Republic though the Great Depression and destroyed the right win Neo-fascists "Amercia First" wing of the GOP

Barak Obama: entered office when the US was in the worst crisis since the Great Depression, left office with a booming economy

James Polk: the only president to fulfill all of his campaign promises: tariff reform, acquisition of the Oregon Territory, California, and the Territory of New Mexico; the positive settlement of the Texas border dispute. His administration also ushered in stamped mail; before him, all mail was COD.

1 - George Washington - The "Reluctant President". He was not in it for power and truly worked for the people.
2 - Thomas Jefferson - Ardent defender of the separation of church and state. Going as far as telling people to question with boldness the existence of a god which was huge for a prominent figure of the time.
3 - Abraham Lincoln - Savior of the Republic. Reset us on the path of a more perfect union.
4 - Franklin D. Roosevelt - New Deal, infrastructure, WW2 leadership
5 - Dwight D. Eisenhower - continuing New Deal/infrastructure, NASA, interstates, civil rights, desegregation, cooling the Cold War

I could agree with this list.

I Like Ike!

Effective General and great post-war president that warned us about the MIC on his farewell address. Governed at a time of great wealth creation in the US.

Washington is my #1..

Most everyone else is basically subject to change in my ranking. But I do consider Eisenhower the best of the 20th century, and probably in my top 4 (all time).
And incidentally, presidential ranking is a topic that never gets old..

Thomas Jefferson
George Washington
Donald Trump
Dwight Eisenhower

Can't think of any others I admire as leaders of our nation. Mostly, America's greatness stems from WHO first settled it, not from its leaders.

The BEST:

Lincoln
Washington
Jefferson
Eisenhower
Reagan

My Personal Favs:

Teddy Roosevelt for getting shot and still tough enough to deliver a speech. Trump for being JUST who he is, and Obama for how much he pissed off the majority, that was classic gold!
