Well...standard, level, single track railroads cost ~$1 million per mile; add another $1 million to bring it to passenger rail standards. Also add the fact that this is a maglev, requiring special 'tracks', specialized equipment over rather rough terrain and we're looking at $10-15 million per mile. Times 250 miles, and that is well in to the billions. Las Vegas is a very touristy city, but a Maglev would be ineffective due to the relative proximity of the hotspots.

There are more pressing regions of this country that should receive such a project.

And China will have an environment as clean as ours before this train to Vegas gets built.

How was our environmental record 40 years ago?

I could also see Vancouver - Seattle - Olympia - Portland and San Jose - Los Angeles - San Diego. There's not enough business interaction between Phoenix and Tucson to justify the expense but there's probably something to be said for a T-shaped route centered in Austin linking it to the 3 larger cities in Texas. Let's put America to work!
Great ideas, it's disappointing how far behind the U.S. is on public transportation. All they would really have to do is build a super long North-South route on the coasts, one cross-country route, and then some branches to Texas, Chicago, etc.

For you young whipper snappers.

Lyndon LaRouche
http://www.etext.org/Politics/LaRouche/larouche.program.01 (broken link)
I think he ran for Presisdent in 92 and the MagLev was on his platform.

I rememeber at the time I thought it was a pretty reasonable thing to do. But gas was cheap and the press wrote him off as a nutcase. So Americans went off and bought SUVs and built McMansions 100 miles from their "work" instead.

Had we listened, we would be iding on it now. Let's build it. Let's show the world we can still lead. Let's let the Veterans have first dibs on the jobs and lets do it with zero tolerance for corruption.

1. Yes it could be easily and cheaply be widened, but the same problems will only come back. And knowing southern California, those problems will be back quick!
2. The Amtrak? LOL. Nobody used it because it took about 5 hours just to get to Vegas. But a train that would get to Vegas in one hour as proposed, would become a big hit for Angelinos.
3. The proposal regarding Disneyland is only there because OC is trying to get that bid. It makes sense because there is more open space in the OC. That whole area, Disneyland, Arrowhead Pond, and Angels stadium has a ton of parking available. Well, from what Ive seen. Though I never go into Anaheim when driving to LA. But it has nothing to do with the fact they are so different from each other. Besides, I see alot of parents with their kids at the casino's at 1a.m. anyways in Vegas.

Its a kick ass idea. I hope the money proposal does go through. At the same time, it would provide reciprocal benefits to LV citizens that want to hang out at the beach with great weather.
I agree there are allot of CA weekender's that do Vegas!
When I lived in Vegas believe it or not there were allot people who actually commuted to LA for work everyday from Vegas! It was cheaper for them and a better lifestyle to live in NV than CA.
So I think that the people would be there to support it for sure. Especially now with gas prices.
The next stop would be to Phoenix.
