I'm curious as to how Newsome is considered sleazy...oh the greasiness of it all that 2 80+ year olds are finally able to declare their love for each other. Oh how disgusting!!!! Please, lighten up people!

1) If you say you aren't Christian, why are you so concerned about following all that's in the Bible?

2) Why should everyone then be obligated to follow the Bible also?

3) Since we have freedom of religion in this country, and clearly not everyone follows the same one or one at all, why should our laws regarding marriage be based on any particular person's interpretation of the Bible or any such book?
Nothing in the Bible is anti gay, in fact it says God is love, and if two people, no matter what gender combination, love each other, doesn't it mean God is with them? What makes a straight persons love any better or truer than a gay persons love? nothing is stronger than love.

The marriages have begun in California in counties willing to stay open after 5PM. But tomorrow morning will be the first wave of hundreds of civil ceremonies.

The point about ignorance & fear is compounded by isolation. California has a sizable gay population & people here have become acquainted with gay people for a long time. That intermingling produces genuine friendship. What friend would deny happiness for others? Would deny gay marriage to gay friends? Even VP Cheney wants gay marriage since his daughter is married to a woman & they have children, Cheney's grandchildren.

The fear is the lack of socialization & insight. Anyone other than radical Christians has no moral reason for denying others the right of marriage [even if you have never known a gay person - unfortunately the lack of exposure to the broader world leads to ignorance. Thankfully the younger generation see gay marriage as a non-issue. The media/Internet has helped dispel rigidity and prejudice.

That's pretty much where I stand. This should be a states' rights issue.

Personally, I don't care either way. I'm not gay, but at the same time, if they do marry, it doesn't affect my life in any way.

All of the people who go on about the "sanctity of marriage" need to start doing something about how straight people have perverted marriage...the divorce rate is ridiculous. I don't see how gay people marrying could cheapen marriage anymore than straight people already have.

I heard the story this morning of the two 80+ year old women that have been together for abut 50 years and are now finally able to say that they are married, good for them, it brought a tear to my eye.
So my answer is: gay people - yes (Britney Spears - maybe not)

illegal
Unless they are going to make all forms of alternative 'marriages' legal including polygamy. And then it would be up to the states, and state can't be forced to recognize it.

I do... and so do people in the gay community, especially if they've been with a partner for longer than most straight couples.

Yes, that is a beautiful story... the old women, not Britney Spears. But ironically, Britney's sham marriages are recognized by the law. And some people here would say they're more "sacred" than a gay marriage, even when the couple has been together for 50+ years.

Here's a picture of the newly married couple, Phyllis & Del, who are finally legally bound... possibly just in time, since Del is in a weak state. If anyone is threatened by these two, I think we need to re-assess priorities and fears in this country.

By definition, it isn't "marriage" anyway. I personally have nothing against "civil unions" in these cases, though.
