Daschle's issues came out of the vetting audit. The taxes were paid before he filed his papers with the Senate Finance Committee, and he gave the Committee permission to disclose the matter. Geithner was involved in an IRS audit already. The issues were confirmed in the vetting audit, and Geithener was advised to make all of the back payments plus interest, whether obligated to or not. That's what he did.

I'm sure the IRS is happy that their propaganda has had its desired effect on you, but that isn't the way things work. If all you ever file is a 1040A, the only errors you can have are transcription errors and math errors. But if you ever end up having a more complex tax package to file, you'll find that these sorts of back and forth matters with the IRS are quite common. No one knows what the correct amount of tax is...not the taxpayer, and not the IRS. The taxpayer goes first. On April 15, he says I think my tax liabilities are all satisfied by paying amount X, and here are all the forms, schedules, attachments, and notes that lead me to that conclusion. The IRS reviews all that and sees what it thinks. If it agrees, the matter is settled. If it has questions or needs more explanation, they write you back, and you can go on for quite a while before both sides agree on a number. There's no freaking JAIL involved here. It's a garden variety back and forth to figure out the correct liability. The image that you conjure up of these sorts of things is simply not applicable.
