But it seems the celebration of ignorance is something deeply ingrained in America, and I want to know why.
I think it's rooted in the fact that we kicked England out of here. And from that time, there's always been a rebellion against authority and intellectualism.
I agree with you, though. A high percentage of Americans seem to take pride in being dumb. I think that percentage is slowly decreasing, however.
His recent comment about not wanting qu-eers around his kids just reinforced the image.
Lol, 'Joe six pack' is not "Joe the plumber'. I have considered myself as a 'Joe six pack'. Thats just a term to describe the average working guy. Joe is just an easy name to remember I guess. I am still mystified as to where 'White Trash' is being glorified. No more so than 'gangstah', 'heroin chic' etc. Larry the Cable guy, Jeff Foxworthy et al certainly appeal to certain groups of people ( I'm OK with Foxworthy but Larry ain't my bag really) but what folks find humorous does not necessarily mean it is being 'glorified'. One has the option to not partake of different culture. If the OP here thinks that 'white trash' is being glorified, then, what would he wish to see done about it? Let folks have their fun and idolize who they wish.

"...we are hearing a lot from the pundits and candidates about "heartland voters," and "white working class voters." What they are talking about are rednecks.
The term redneck indicates a lifestyle and culture that can be found in every state in our union. The essentials of redneck culture were brought to America by what we call the Scots Irish, after first being shipped to the Ulster Plantation, where our, uh, remarkable cultural legacy can still be seen every 12 July in Ireland.
Ultimately, the Scots Irish have had more of an effect on the American ethos than any other immigrant group. All this has become so deeply instilled as to now be reflexive. It represents many of the worst traits in American culture and a few of the best."
My dad's neck was always red. His upper arms and torso were pale. He worked his ass off for those tan lines.
