And as far as the Republican party "going down in flames", I think that you are mistaking that smoke on Capitol Hill. It's not the Republicans--- it's flambe' biotch Nancy Pelosi, writhing in the flames of her own lies.

It is clear that Nancy Pelosi was briefed in 2002 on the waterboarding and other techniques being used at the time... and she raised no objections. Only much later, did she begin lambasting President Bush over everything from the Surge to the prisoners at Gitmo... and waterboarding.
It is equally clear that, while she had no problem with the terrorists who planned the 9/11 attacks being waterboarded, she later decided to pretend outrage over that same waterboarding... when she needed to use it as a tool to destroy President Bush.
Here we have the Speaker of the House, leader of the House and third in line for the Presidency, ignoring the importance of serious and careful planning of the war against terrorists, and flip-flopping over it randomly, using it simply for the purpose of destroying her political opponents and furthering her own political agenda in Washington DC.
Is this the Democrat "leadership" the American people deserve, as our enemies who declared war on us continue to plot and attack us all over the world?
Pelosi's behavior, carried on year after year now, is beyond shocking, verging on disgraceful. She clearly considers her personal fight against Republicans, far more important than the fight against terrorists who killed three thousand civilians in New York and elsewhere. And she apparently has no problem bending and twisting her party's efforts into a vendetta against anyone who objects, going so far as to accuse the entire CIA of lying and misleading her when her machinations are brought to light.
What benefits, exactly, are the American people reaping from having this woman in such a responsible position in the American government? Is there any chance she will stop attacking and tearing down our own people, long enough to notice that the country is in severe trouble on many fronts and needs leadership from SOMEONE in Congress?

Robert Byrd WAS elected to the House of Representatives - most recently in 1956. He's been a Senator for the last 50 years.
The original post said he was "Next in line to be Speaker of the House". He was a Congressman 50 years ago, and 50 years ago, as a serving Congressman I suppose he was eligible to be Speaker. Is he eligible today? Is he "Next in line"?
I think not. Hell, he does not even know where he is, they just roll him around.
I would like you to explain to the readership how a Senator can become Speaker of the United States House of Representatives without being elected to the House of Representatives. Robert Carlyle Byrd is a SENATOR not a Congressman. I will also ask you research and report back on how a Speaker is selected. Is it senority? Is he/she elected by members of the House? Senate? Combination of the 2? Is the name pulled out of the hat with the names selected from attendees of the last horseshoe throwing contest in Waskom, Texas?
There is a wealth of information out there, why not look into it?
Shoot, I was hoping to wake up this morning, see what had been posted, and then jump in with a bunch of bird puns. You know, Byrd swooping in on the office, that sort of thing. But looks like I fell victim to the old read-something-on-the-internet-and-started-a-thread-without-stopping-to-think-about-it trap. The only thing to say in a moment like that is:

She just changed her story at every press conference, tried to shift the focus off herself and continued to attempt to blame others for her failure to act (if she truly objected to these practices). The stuttering, mumbling attempts, on camera, to find her prepared diversion response sure looked like the truth to me.
Early on the morning of June 20, 2002, then-Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Bob Graham, D-Fla., received a telephone call at home from a highly agitated Dick Cheney. Graham, who was in the middle of shaving, held a razor in one hand as he took the phone in the other.
The vice president got right to the point: A story in his morning newspaper reported that telephone calls intercepted by the National Security Agency on September 10, 2001, apparently warned that Al Qaeda was about to launch a major attack against the United States, possibly the next day. But the intercepts were not translated until September 12, 2001, the story said, the day after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Because someone had leaked the highly classified information from the NSA intercepts, Cheney warned Graham, the Bush administration was considering ending all cooperation with the joint inquiry by the Senate and House Intelligence committees on the government's failure to predict and prevent the September 11 attacks. Classified records would no longer be turned over to the Hill, the vice president threatened, and administration witnesses would not be available for interviews or testimony.
Moreover, Graham recalled in an interview for this story, Cheney warned that unless the leaders of the Intelligence committees took action to discover who leaked the information about the intercepts -- and more importantly, to make sure that such leaks never happened again -- President Bush would directly make the case to the American people that Congress could not be trusted with vital national security secrets.
