This would do nothing but give rise to higher potential of broken families.
Are you a proponent of social engineering?
What of the married john who gets arrested, has his picture shown in the newspaper and is classified as a sex offender? I'd think such a scenario is detrimental to the family as well.
What of those who are single or those whose wives don't care?

As it is now we have large numbers of people harmfully addicted to gambling, drinking, smoking... etc.
Addiction is a human condition that can neither be created nor curbed with legislation.

Keeping prostitution illegal has given it a filthy, sketchy and reprehensible reputation... which it certainly is (where it is illegal), this has effectively curbed a large amount of patronage.
How can you possibly know this? The only places in the country with legal prostitution are rural Nevada counties. It is illegal in Washoe (Reno) and Clark (Las Vegas) counties. There is no shortage of hookers nor johns in these counties. Indeed, I'd bet there are more women illegally peddling sex in Reno than all the legal prostitutes in the state combined.
I agree and there should be some kind of safeguard for the girls. Unfortunately condoms are the only thing they can use to help. If It was legalised and a guy either woulden't use a condom or didn't have one, they would either be escorted out or given a condom. At the moment the girls have absolutely no safety or rights and will continue prostitution anyway. If it was legal it can be taxed and the girls can be safe. It is the oldest profession and shouldn't be a crime...bit like prohibition... it's stupid!
Who is pornography different from prostitution? Most producers pay at least two porn stars to perform, so isn't that paying for sex? What is the difference between that and prostitution? It is still sex for money...

Keep in mind that condoms are to protect against unwanted pregnancies, not STDs.

Except prohibition came about during WWI when they were using alcohol to manufacture munitions for the war effort, and having drinks available for our troops. After the war repealing prohibition was not nearly as important as other issues at the time... It wasn't stupid, it had a reason behind it. Not sure what the reasoning is behind banning prostitution, because even several of the founding fathers regularly visited brothels..

My issue is that it is not always the prostitute who gives the STD to the customer, but vice versa.
This is a perfect argument for legalization.
Nevada prostitutes are regularly tested and condoms are required. Any girl who tests positive for AIDS (there's been only one that I'm aware of) is immediately fired. There have been no known cases of customer infection.
Legalize it. Regulate it. Heavily increase the penalties for those who go outside the system.

Keep in mind that condoms are to protect against unwanted pregnancies, not STDs. Condoms do protect against AIDs. Herpes keeps returning. Fortunately the other venerial diseases can be treated.

WW 1 & 2 were Huge problems in the UK . There was no prohibition. The pubs were made to shut at a earlier time and the girls got into work at the munitions factories or tending the farms or many other jobs ok. Prohibition was a knee jerk reaction that made many many gangsters very rich. Bit like prostitution which makes pimps very rich.

I'll discuss this from a disease standpoint, not legalization. I for one do not believe there has only been one Nevada prostitute with AIDS, and no known cases of customer infection. STDs are a merry go round: a guy gives them to a woman, gives them to another man, gives them to another woman, etc. Your post makes it sound like it's all the woman's fault. No method of BC is foolproof, not condoms, not anything!
