I had to check to be sure, but you are quite correct. The legal definition of murder in common law based jurisdictions specifies that the victim MUST be a human being.

I never equated killing an animal as murder, but now I am assured of my legal innocence by reason of statute definition. Thanks!

Reading this story and some of the posts on this forum reminds me of why I value my cat's life more than the lives of most people. My guess is the people who reported the "feral" cat to the authorities probably don't feel the slightest pang of guilt that it was killed. If the cat scratched her daughter, it was obviously because she was molesting it. God forbid.
